Maddie Huth notched a season-best five kills in Angelo State's 3-0 (28-30, 18-25, 13-25) loss to No. 11 Emporia State Friday afternoon at the Lady Blues Regional Crossover Tournament.
Huth had a great day offensively, hitting a team-best .364 and only committing one attack error. Freshman
Kaelen Valdez led the Rambelles (6-8) on defense, notching a team-best 11 digs. Sophomore
Chelsea Gibson recorded eight kills and two total blocks, while sophomore Alex Woosley registered 28 assists, four kills and three digs.
The first set was an exciting one, as it had 14 ties and six lead changes. With the 'Belles up 24-20, the Hornets (12-2) forced the Rambelles into a pair of attack errors, and jumped back into the game. Emporia State took the lead 25-24 and with set-point on the line ASU's
Katie Coleman spiked the ball over the net for a kill tying the game at 25 apiece.
Alisa Meredith followed suit and notched a kill of her own, giving Angelo State the set point, but a kill by ESU's Brittany Miller would give the Hornets a 27-26 lead. Meredith and the Rambelles refused to quit as the Amarillo native slammed another kill evening the score at 27 all. Miller countered with another kill, which was followed by an Emporia State miscue. With the game tied for the 14th time, ESU knocked down back-to-back kills to take the set 30-28.
Angelo State came back in the second set and hit .294 and had 14 kills. But, Emporia State would not let the 'Belles walk away without a fight. The Hornets took a four-point advantage (11-7) on a kill by Miller. Miller played well for ESU as she knocked down four more kills in the set. Down 22-17, Angelo State called for a timeout, but it did not deter the Hornets. Emporia State came back on the court and won the second set, 25-18.
Down two games to none, the Rambelles fought tirelessly game three, but Emporia State would not back down. The Hornets' offensive attack was on point as they hit .480 in the third set and had 14 kills with only two attack errors. The Hornets went on to take the third set by a score of 25-13.
Emporia State was led offensively by Miller who slammed a match-high 19 kills and hit a whopping .680 in the match. Setter Ting Liu had 39 assists, eight digs and three kills for the Hornets, while Meg Schwartz contributed 14 digs and Jocelyn DeMotte recorded 10 digs. Brianne Boner recorded 10 kills and hit .333 in the contest.
The Belles are back in action at the Lady Blues Regional Crossover Tournament Saturday, Oct. 2, at 11 a.m., when they battle it out with Southwest Baptist University.
