SAN ANGELO, Texas – Despite out-hitting No. 22 Lubbock Christian, .219 to .192, Angelo State fell to the Lady Chaps in four sets (25-16, 20-25, 21-25, 22-25). Sophomore
Alisa Meredith led the 'Belles with nine kills, two assists, 16 digs and a block assist in the loss at the Angelo Retina/ASU Invitational in Stephens Arena.
Meredith had a solid defensive effort for the 'Belles (3-4), and just missed a double-double (nine kills, 16 digs). Sophomores
Emily Booth and
Chelsea Gibson each posted 11 kills and Gibson notched a match-high five block assists. Sophomore
Alex Woolsey recorded 43 assists, seven digs, five kills and four block assists in another outstanding performance for the setter. Freshman Julie Kennedy posted a season-high 10 kills with a .391 hitting percentage in her excellent offensive showing.
The Rambelles held Lubbock Christian (10-1) to a .071 hitting percentage in the first set, while tallying 11 kills. Angelo State broke a 15-15 tie on a kill by Booth to take the lead for good. The 'Belles would finish the first set on a 10-2 run, winning, 25-16.
Angelo State jumped out in front to start the second set, putting up five points to LCU's one. The Lady Chaps would not go quietly, coming back and knotting the score at 11 on a Brittany Johnson kill, followed by a service ace by Bailey Jones to take the lead. That seemed to be the turning point for LCU, as it went on to win set two, 25-20.
Lubbock Christian held Angelo State to a .163 hitting percentage and pounded out 15 kills on a .244 hitting percentage. Behind impeccable serving by Nikki Ralston, the Lady Chaps scored eight consecutive points to take the third set by a score of 25-21.
ASU refused to back down and began the fourth set on a 7-2 run on kills by Booth, Meredith and Gibson. With a seven point advantage (18-11), LCU slowly chipped away at the 'Belles' lead pulling within two (22-20). The Lady Chaps pulled out all the stops and tied the game at 22, taking advantage of a pair of Rambelles' errors. The Lady Chaps forced the 'Belles to commit two more errors and put the game away, 25-22 on a kill by Elissa Loynes.
The Lady Chaps were led by Loynes' double-double (13 kills, 11 digs). Jones was one dig shy of a double-double as she tallied 13 kills and nine digs.
Angelo State's next action is tonight at 6 p.m., against Colorado School of Mines in the final game of the Angelo Retina/ASU Invitational.
