Belles, Bonter Impressive Over Cameron, 3-0

LAWTON, Okla – Celeste Bonter recorded her 11th match of double-digit kills on the season to help guide the Belles volleyball team to a 3-0 (25-19, 25-19, 26-24) Lone Star Conference win over Cameron University in Aggie Gym on Thursday night.

Bonter had 17 kills for Angelo State and a .516 hitting percentage to help the Belles move to 8-1 in LSC play and win their 19th game overall, tying last season's win total, with 11 matches to go. The senior from Ontario, Canada also had two digs and two total blocks.

“She was definitely a go-to threat tonight, she really hit some bombs for us,” head coach Chuck Waddington said. “Maddie Huth was the same way; she put the ball away pretty consistently. It was a good team win. We defended well. Our dig numbers were pretty low, but when we did dig we scored in transition and that's the key to victory.”

The Belles also welcomed back Kaelen Valdez to the lineup as the sophomore was playing in her first match since Sept. 13 because of an injury. The Helotes native had nine kills and nine digs in her return.

“She played really well; she saw the court so well,” Waddington said. “She creates good scoring opportunities for herself because she understands the game and knows how to score.

“We did a good job getting her the ball in good situations and at the same time mixing up with our middles and our right side.”

Final Box

Angelo State was playing its first game since coming off a 3-1 record at the Lady Blues Classic last weekend in Topeka, Kan. Belles quickly fell behind in the first set against Cameron and Aggies'  freshmen Kelle Carver, being down 10-5.

“They came out on fire, up 10-5 early on in the first set,” Waddington said. “(Carver), a lefty was just ridiculous. Everything she touched was a kill.

“We were kind of on our heels a little bit to start,” Waddington continued. “Called a timeout at 10-5 to calm us down and get us back into it and what we were trying to do and after we tied it at 12 and we didn't look back after that.”

In the third set, the Belles found themselves behind 21-24 before rallying to score five-unanswered points to close set – and the match – with a 26-24 win.

“We stayed late in the game and stayed low-error,” Waddington said. “They got stuck in a rotation that was a tough one for them, their lefty kid was in the back row and they were kind of predictable. We then turned the notch up on our serving.

“Our outsides did a great job for us tonight. We made some adjustments and defended that kid a little better kind of took her out of her rhythm, started blocking her, digging her a little bit so once we got out of that hump we played pretty well and it was a pretty solid effort.”

Junior setter Alex Woolsey paced the Belles offense with 38 assists to go with eight digs. Senior Debbie Ohl had nine kills while Huth added seven. Kayla Smith and Shelby Wilt each had seven digs.

Carver led Cameron (10-7 overall, 4-5 LSC) with 16 kills while teammate Adrienne Lawson added 11.

Angelo State will continue its travel on the road to face Midwestern State Saturday, Oct. 8 at 2 p.m.
