Game 1 Final Stats (.pdf) | Game 2 Final Stats (.pdf)

SAN ANGELO – Toby Semler hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning to lift Angelo State over No. 13 St. Mary's, 6-4, in game one of a non-conference doubleheader at Foster Field to extend the Rams' win streak to 10 games. However, the Rattlers came back in game two to shutout the Rams, 1-0, snapping ASU's win streak and splitting the doubleheader.

After scoring an early run in the first inning on a Garrett Harris double to center which scored senior designated hitter Travis Lites all the way from first, the Rams (17-8) fell behind 2-1 when the Rattlers (19-6) plated a pair of runs in the top of the second on a Weston Baros homer.

St. Mary's added to its lead in the following frame with a lead-off single by Ryan Morrow. Designated hitter Greg Herbst doubled to rightfield moving Morrow to third. With no outs, Derek Moczygemba hit a sacrifice fly to deep center to score Morrow and give the Rattlers a 3-1 advantage.

Baros belted his second homer of the game in the top of the fourth put the visitors on top 4-1. Just when it started looking like Angelo State was in store for its first loss since Feb. 26, Semler led off the bottom of the fifth with a single to center. Third baseman Marcellous Biggins put runners at first and second after drawing a walk. With one out, Semler advanced to third on Lites' fly out to center. Biggins stole second and with two outs, senior first baseman Zak Leonhardt laced a single through the right side scoring both Semler and Biggins. Leonhardt's two-RBI single cut the Rattlers' lead to one (4-3).

Trailing by one and heading into the bottom of the sixth, junior rightfielder Tate Allison singled back up the middle with one out to start things off. Sophomore shortstop Brent Denny followed with a single to right-centerfield moving Allison to third. Semler belted a 1-0 count over the leftfield fence to give the Rams a 6-4 lead. The knock was Semler's first home run in a Rams' uniform.

Angelo State starter Bryant Rutledge (4-2) went 6.0 innings and allowed four runs, all earned, and struck out five collecting the win. He was relieved by sophomore James Conlee who pitched the seventh and retired the Rattlers in order to earn his fifth save of the season.

St. Mary's Matt Holland (6-1) suffered his first loss of the season surrendering six runs, five earned, on nine hits in 5.1 innings of work. He walked four and fanned six.

In the night cap, starters Rick Reyna (3-1) and Greg Herbst (2-2) matched each other as both pitched complete games.

The difference in the ballgame came in the top of the third when Reagan Moczygemba led off the frame with a double down the leftfield line. A fly out to center by Morrow advanced Reagan Moczygemba to third and he came around to score on a double to left-center by his brother Derek Moczygemba.

After the third, Reyna settled down as he struck out four batters and allowed just one extra-base hit. For the game, Reyna allowed one earned run on seven hits, walked three and fanned six in 7.0 innings of work absorbing his first loss of the season. Herbst tossed a complete game shutout scattering five hits, walking one and striking out 12 in 7.0 innings to earn the victory.

The shutout marks the first time Angelo State has been held scoreless since a 10-0 loss to then-No. 12 Abilene Christian a year ago.

The Rams look to get back on the winning track Sunday, March 20, when they travel to San Antonio, to battle it out once again with No. 13 St. Mary's. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 4 p.m. Live stats and live audio will be available on AngeloSports.com. The game will also be broadcast live on KKSA 1260 by Jeremy Bryant.
