SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State volleyball team excelled in the ASU Invitational as it swept both Texas-Permian Basin (25-13, 25-15, 25-22) and Edinboro (25-18, 25-14, 25-15) to improve to 10-0 on the season. The Belles handed previously undefeated Edinboro its first loss of the year.
Junior
Alex Woolsey was phenomenal for ASU as she recorded a pair of double-doubles and finished the tournament with a total of 130 assists and 46 digs. The setter out of Plano averaged 10.83 assists per set and also contributed 17 kills in the two days. Woolsey tallied 40 assists, 11 digs and four kills versus UTPB (5-4) and posted 27 assists, 11 digs, three kills and a pair of block assists against Edinboro.(7-1).
In the first match, Angelo State hit .297 and notched 47 kills en route to a three-game sweep of Texas-Permian Basin. The Belles held the Falcons to just .089 hitting, as the defense turned in another strong performance. The back row for ASU was led by senior defensive specialist
Kayla Smith's 17 digs, Woolsey's 11, and freshman
Shelby Wilt's 10.
Chelsea Gibson and
Celeste Bonter guarded the net with four and three block assists, respectively.
The Belles' offense was paced by sophomores
Kaelen Valdez and
Maddie Huth who each tallied a match-high nine kills in the contest. Gibson added six kills with a team-leading .625 hitting percentage for the Belles.
Despite a close third set in which UTPB took a three-point advantage (19-16), the Belles regrouped after a timeout and closed out the set on an 8-3 run to win by a 25-22 margin.
Texas-Permian Basin was led by Alex Genung and Melissa Lusk who each notched eight kills, while Genung added 11 digs. Danae Eckart posted 13 digs and Heather Sanchez tallied 10. At setter, Sara Torres recorded 16 assists, while Ariel Fralick had 11.
The Belles brought their A-game in the final match as they hosted Edinboro which entered the match with a 7-0 record. In the battle of the undefeated, Angelo State dominated the match sweeping the Fighting Scots and limiting them to a .015 hitting percentage.
Angelo State's Gibson was the only player on either squad to reach double-digit kills with 10 on 17 attempts and just one attack error to hit .529. The junior middle blocker added a solo block and four block assists. Sophomore
Maddie Huth and senior
Debbie Ohl also led the Belles in blocks with four and three block assists, respectively.
Wilt notched 15 digs to lead ASU on defense, while Woolsey's 11 helped stymie Edinboro's offensive attack. Defensively, the Belles notched 54 digs and 11.0 total team blocks in the contest.
Edinboro's Gina Boothe led the Fighting Scots with nine kills, while Megan Osysko posted 23 assists, and Brittany Flynn contributed 16 digs.
Following the tournament, four Belles were named to the all-tournament team in Gibson, Ohl, Valdez and Woolsey. In addition, Southeastern Oklahoma's Lunden Azuara, Tarleton State's Nikki McNorton, Abilene Christian's Jennie Hutt, Edinboro's Boothe and Flynn, St. Edward's Courtney Trevino, Texas A&M International's Andrea Marshall, and Texas-Permian Basin's Lusk were also named to the ASU Invitational All-Tournament Team.
The Belles' next action is Tuesday, Sept. 13, at 7 p.m. when they host Texas A&M-Kingsville in a Lone Star Conference match at the Junell Center/Stephens Arena. Live stats, live streaming and live audio will be available on AngeloSports.com.
