No. 9 Belles Earn Sweep of ENMU on Senior Day

Alisa Meredith
SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State volleyball team wrapped up an undefeated home regular season with a 3-0 (25-17, 25-10, 25-14) Lone Star Conference win over Eastern New Mexico in a Saturday afternoon match that was Senior Day for Emily Booth, Katie Coleman, Chelsea Gibson, Alisa Meredith and Alex Woolsey.

The Belles (22-3, 15-1 LSC) improved to 11-0 at the Junell Center and will finish the regular season with a four-match road trip. ASU, which has now swept 16 opponents this season, maintains first place in the conference and is in control of its own destiny to host the conference tournament if it can win at least two of its final four matches.

“We always want to protect our home court,” Woolsey said. “We really want to host and knew that we had to come out here focused to get a win here today. It's a big advantage to play the tournament at home and we know that we have to continue playing like we are right now to win out.”

The Belles swept eight of their 11 home matches this season and dropped only three sets all season. ASU hit for a .252 percentage and held opponents to a .086 percentage in those matches.

“This was something that they were intent on doing,” said ASU head coach Chuck Waddington of the team finishing the regular season without dropping a match on the Stephens Arena court. “We've been close to going undefeated at home before, but they put it all together. That's something they should all be very proud of.”

Woolsey led the Belles with 45 assists and added nine digs, while Booth added nine kills and Coleman had three kills and two digs. Meredith started the match and had two digs, while Gibson was unable to play because of injury. Shelbi Goode topped ASU with 13 kills with Maddie Huth adding 11, while Shelby Wilt led the team with 26 digs. Kaelen Valdez added 17 digs and five kills in the win.

Lindsey Barron led the Zias with 11 kills, while Kennedi Catano had 19 assists and 11 digs.

ASU, which held a .277 to .028 hitting percentage advantage over the Zias, has now won a season-high nine straight matches going into road matches at Incarnate Word and Texas A&M-Kingsville next weekend.

“There were tons of emotions for us this weekend,” Waddington said. “We did something on Friday that we haven't done in a long time and then we bounced back today without any letdown. That really shows the leadership and drive this team has. I'm really pleased with how the players handled everything.”
