No. 12 Belles Sweep Lions at the Junell Center

Katie Coleman
SAN ANGELO – Alex Woolsey had 39 assists and eight digs to help lead No. 12 Angelo State to a 3-0 (25-22, 25-17, 25-17) Lone Star Conference win over Texas A&M-Commerce on Saturday at the Junell Center.

The Belles (16-3, 9-1 LSC) are now 7-0 at home and have won 11 of their last 12 matches, while the Lions (12-6, 4-5 LSC) have not beat ASU since the 2007 season and fall to 36-19 all-time against ASU. Angelo State, which is now 12-1 in three-set matches this season, hit for a .240 percentage in the match and limited Commerce to a .133 percentage – including a .071 percentage in the second set.

“I think that we played really consistently today and last night,” Woolsey said. “When we are in system it is hard for people to hang with us and that is what we did really well against Commerce. We came into the game with great concentration and also had a strong block throughout.”

“I felt like we were pretty clean and got to transition towards the end of the game,” said ASU libero Shelby Wilt, who led the Belles with 17 digs. “We did a great job of mixing up our sets and that we played a really scrappy game. Everyone was going for every ball and giving it a great effort to get the win.”

Goode continues to pace the Belles in assists this season with 252, while Woolsey now has 748 assists this year and Wilt leads with 319 digs. Woolsey, who is within striking distance of the ASU career record in assists (Amber Nelson, 4,786), has 4,439 career assists with 10 regular season matches to play.

The Belles return to action next weekend with a pair of road matches. ASU starts the weekend with a 4 p.m. match at Midwestern State before traveling to play Cameron at 2 p.m. on Saturday in Lawton, Okla.

“We have to stay focused on the present,” Woolsey said. “There's a lot of things that we could start looking forward to but we have to stay focused on the challenges that are right in front of us. We have had a tendency to look past people in the past and we know we can't do that anymore.”
