SAN ANGELO – Lauren Holt had a career-high 23 points and 17 rebounds and the Angelo State Belles opened their season with a 57-47 non-conference win over St. Edward's on Tuesday at Stephens Arena inside the Junell Center.
The Belles (1-0, 0-0 LSC) gave themselves some cushion with a nice run to end the first half and took a 30-21 halftime lead before holding off the Hilltoppers through an evenly played second half. ASU made 24 free throws in the game and outrebound St. Edward's 52-40.
Holt went 9-for-11 from the field in the game and also made five free throws to start her season off. Her previous high was 14 points last season against Texas Woman's.
Leah LeMaire and
Cassi Stegall added eight points each, while freshman
Amanda Weaver added six points.
Haylee Oliver added four points and eight rebounds and led the team with two blocks.
Stephanie Dekkers led St. Edward's with 12 points and four rebounds, while Dawn Kiel added 11 points and Valencia White had six rebounds.
The Belles travel to Denton this weekend to play in the Texas Woman's University Tournament. ASU plays at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday against Central Oklahoma and will then play at 2 p.m. on Sunday against Texas A&M International.
