No. 11 Belles Earn 3-1 Win Over Texas A&M-Kingsville

Alex Woolsey

SAN ANGELO – Shelby Wilt tied a career high with 30 digs and the Angelo State volleyball team extended its winning streak to a season-long seven matches with a 3-1 (25-12, 25-27, 25-16, 25-18) Lone Star Conference win over Texas A&M-Kingsville on Tuesday at the Junell Center.

No. 11 ASU (12-2, 5-0 LSC) improved to 5-0 at home along with staying perfect in conference play, while the Javelinas (6-7, 0-5 LSC) were able to stop a 19-set winning streak the Belles were on with a second set win.

“They were very athletic and an aggressive serving team,” ASU head coach Chuck Waddington said. “They missed a lot of serves in the first set and I told the girls that they were about to start putting those in. When they did that, they made a run against us to win the set. They also put a good block on us and took a set. I really liked how we responded in the third set though. We didn't panic and became more disciplined.”

Kaelen Valdez led the Belles with 14 kills and added 21 digs, while Shelbi Goode had 13 kills and nine digs just hours after being named the LSC's Offensive Player of the Week for her effort in last week's matches. Wilt, who also had 30 digs against West Texas A&M last season, recorded 12 digs in the second set along with nine in the third.

“Shelby did a tremendous job of handling the ball for us,” Waddington said. “Every time they came across court she was there for the dig. I was very impressed with her tonight.”

Alex Woolsey went over 50 assists for the second time this season with 51 assists against the Javelinas, while Maddie Huth had eight kills and three blocks. Emily Booth added seven kills with Chelsea Gibson and Katie Coleman each contributing six. The Belles hit for a .244 percentage while limiting TAMU-Kingsville to a .122 percentage.

ASU returns to action at 7 p.m. on Friday at Eastern New Mexico before playing at No. 5 West Texas A&M at 2 p.m. on Saturday.

“Anytime that you're on a bus for five hours, you never really know what is going to happen,” Waddington said. “Friday's match at Eastern is going to be tough and is looking to be a spoiler. WT is WT still and are a top-5 team in the country for a lot of reasons. It's a very important weekend for us.”
