Wilt becomes ASU's all-time digs leader in 3-1 Belles' win over Cameron

LAWTON, Okla. – Shelby Wilt established herself as the Angelo State volleyball program's all-time digs leader on Friday when she delivered 23 digs and helped lead the Belles to a 3-1 (25-20, 26-28, 25-13, 25-20) Lone Star Conference win over Cameron at the Aggie Gym.

The Belles (16-6, 8-3 LSC) have now won four straight conference matches going into a 2 p.m. match on Saturday at Midwestern State. MSU is coming off a five-set victory over Tarleton on Friday and took ASU to five sets in the first meeting between the two schools.

Wilt, who needed only four digs to pass the all-time digs record which Jennifer Glass established at 1,603 in the 1996 season, passed the record early in the first set and finished the first game with eight digs. She now has 1,623 digs in her career after finishing the match with 5.75 digs per set against the Aggies (6-16, 0-10 LSC). Wilt was named the LSC Defensive Player of the Week on Tuesday for the second time this season and is the reigning LSC Libero of the Year.

"We did a great job of scrapping for balls throughout the match," Wilt said. "They were hitting some weird shots and we did a good job of picking them up anyways."

Kaelen Valdez also played strong defense against the Aggies and finished the match with 21 digs. Valdez is fourth in program history with 1,403 digs in her career. Valdez also supplied 13 kills and now has 923 career kills. Maddie Huth led the Belles with 16 kills and hit .381, while freshman Courtney Bartusiak led the team with a .400 hitting percentage and finished the match with nine kills.

Maggi Jo Keffury directed the ASU attack with 54 assists and had 11 digs on defense, while defensive specialist Haley Bianco contributed 15 digs and Katie MacLeay added another 13 digs.

"Our defense was doing a great job of getting them out of system a ton and they didn't have a lot of opportunities to score," ASU head coach Chuck Waddington said. "They hit a lot of shots that we were able to dig to get them off balance. Almost every ball that they attacked on we were able to clean up and gave ourselves a chance to score."

Angelo State, which had a .232-.161 hitting advantage in the match, improved to 2-2 on the road in conference play with the win and have beat CU in nine straight matches between the two programs. The Belles limited their attacking errors to 20 and forced the Aggies into 26 errors. Keffury led the team with two blocks with Huth and Bartusiak having one each. ASU hit .304 in the first set to set the tone and responded quickly after dropping the second set.

Kelle Carver led Cameron with a match-high 23 kills, while Erin Hardy had 33 digs for the Aggies who host Tarleton State on Saturday.

Up Next: The Belles will return to action next week with two home matches. ASU will host its Dig Pink match on Wednesday at 6 p.m. against St. Edward's and then will welcome Texas A&M-Kingsville to the Junell Center at 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 1. On becoming the all-time digs leader in Angelo State volleyball history:
"It's been an awesome opportunity for me to glorify Christ and put the attention on him. It's an awesome thing, but I'm not big on individual recognition and they can make me feel awkward some times. I'm just glad that we won."
