No. 17 Belles sweep Texas A&M-Kingsville on Senior Night

BOX SCORE: Angelo State 3, Texas A&M-Kingsville 0 (25-8, 25-13, 25-15)

SAN ANGELO – Angelo State seniors Kaelen Valdez and Maddie Huth teamed up for a combined 29 kills to help lead the No. 17-ranked Belles to a Lone Star Conference sweep of Texas A&M-Kingsville on Friday's Senior Night match at the Junell Center.

Valdez finished the match with 15 kills and a .433 hitting percentage with Huth having 14 kills and a .333 hitting percentage. Leah McWilliams, who was honored before the match along with Huth, Valdez and student manager, Evan Case, was unable to play on Senior Night due to an injury. The Belles (19-6, 10-3 LSC) have now won a season-high seven straight matches and improved to 12-1 at home this season.

"Our whole team was just clicking," Valdez said. "I just felt the love. Everyone went out and played really hard. You could really tell that we have a lot of chemistry on the court and it showed tonight."

Valdez also finished the match with 12 digs and is now only 50 kills away from 1,000 in her career at Angelo State.

"Kaelen knows every shot in the book and scored on just about every one of them tonight," ASU head coach Chuck Waddington said. "She was very effective over there on the left side."

Maggi Jo Keffury led ASU with 39 assists and added six digs, while Shelby Wilt had 25 digs and to add to her program's best all-time career digs total which is now at 1,680. ASU finished the match with a .319 hitting percentage with Arielle Bond contributing eight kills and Cerbi Ritchey four. Courtney Bartusiak had three kills on five attacks.

"We are handling the ball really well," Waddington said. "It's a serve and pass battle and we're winning it right now. That's the key for us. We have to continue handling the ball and serve tough to create good opportunities for us in transition."

Kelsey Washington led the Javelinas (14-13, 5-6 LSC) with 10 kills and 10 digs with Mariah Carlin adding 10 digs. ASU finished with a 4-2 block advantage with Huth having two blocks. The Belles have now won eight straight matches over the Javelinas and sweep the season series after also taking a three-set win earlier in the season in Kingsville.

UP NEXT: The Belles will travel north next weekend to face No. 6 West Texas A&M in Canyon on Friday, Nov. 8 before heading over to Eastern New Mexico to play at 7 p.m. (CST) match on Saturday, Nov. 9. ASU will then host Incarnate Word on Wednesday, Nov. 13 at 7 p.m. in its final home match of the season.
