Rams, ThunderWolves Split Saturday's Doubleheader, Series

PUEBLO, Colo. – No. 15 Angelo State and Colorado State-Pueblo split a non-conference doubleheader on Saturday with the Rams taking a 2-0 win in the opener before the ThunderWolves took the finale with a 3-2 victory at Rawlings Field.

Angelo State (10-5) led the finale 2-1 going into the eighth inning before CSU-Pueblo (3-5) scored two runs on three hits to come back and secure a series split against the Rams. ASU now holds a 6-2 all-time advantage over the ThunderWolves after the series and falls to 7-2 on the road this season.
 
Christian Summers led the Rams during the four-game series with eight hits in 16 at-bats. The ASU short stop had four doubles, four RBI and scored five runs. Andrew LaCombe, Ryan Greer and Reggie Rodriguez added five hits each in the series, while Lee Neumann had three RBI on four hits.

Angelo State, which stranded 25 runners on base in the series, was limited to a .262 batting average in the series with the ThunderWolves hitting .319.

COLORADO STATE-PUEBLO 3, ANGELO STATE 2

Mario Sanchez and Brett Montague had eighth-inning RBI singles for CSU-Pueblo and Kyle Ginter put the Rams down in order in the top of the ninth as the ThunderWolves took the series finale.

Angelo State led the game 2-1 going into the eighth inning following Christian Summers scoring on an error in the bottom of the eighth after a triple. Summers had scored ASU's first run of the game in the sixth inning on an Andrew LaCombe RBI single which tied the game at 1-1.

Summers and LaCombe each had two hits in the game for the Rams who finished the game with eight hits, but also stranded seven runners on base. Reggie Rodriguez led the game off with a triple to right center but would not score.

Jake Feckley (3-1) received the loss after coming into the game in the eighth inning with one out and a runner on first base. Feckley, who earned the save in the day's first game, gave up three hits and one run in his first loss of the season. Bryant Rutledge scattered eight hits and struck out four in 6.1 innings in his second start of the season.

Dillon Given (1-2) earned the win for the ThunderWolves after coming into the game in the eighth inning for starter Lonny Schoon who struck out three and allowed only one ASU run in seven innings of work. Ginter recorded his first save by picking up two strikeouts before a Brett David pop fly to center field ended the game.


ANGELO STATE 2, CSU-PUEBLO 0

Bryce Zak went eight scoreless innings and Reggie Rodriguez delivered a two-RBI double in the seventh inning to lift Angelo State to a 2-0 non-conference win over Colorado State-Pueblo in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader at Rawlings Field.

Zak (2-0) allowed only two hits and struck out two to earn the win for the Rams in his third start and fourth appearance of the season. Jake Feckley came into the game with one out in the ninth to earn his first save of the season.

Angelo State improves to 10-4, while CSU-Pueblo falls to 2-5 going into the series finale.

Rodriguez, whose double scored Tanner Kalina and Brett David, now has 10 RBI on the season and seven doubles. Christian Summers and Ryan Greer also added doubles for the Rams who finished the game with only three hits. Summers now has six doubles and Greer three through the first 14 games of the year.

The ThunderWolves made the game interesting with a walk and two hits to load the bases with one out in the ninth before Mario Sanchez hit into a game-ending double play. The double play (4-6-3) was turned by second baseman Tyler Coughenour to short stop Christian Summers to first baseman Quaid McKinnon.

Sean Gavin (0-2) receives the loss for CSU-Pueblo after striking out five and allowing only two hits in seven innings. Cameron Hart, Evan Kenebrew, Brett Montague and Dominick Bregar each had singles to account for the ThunderWolves hits.

The second game of Saturday's doubleheader is set to begin around 2:30 p.m. (CST). Bryant Rutledge (0-1) will be making his second start of the season for the Rams.
