SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State softball team swept a doubleheader against Texas A&M International on Saturday with a 9-6 win in the first game and a 10-1 run-shortened decision in the
finale at the ASU Softball Complex.

The Rambelles (13-5) finished the day with 20 hits and only committed one error in the field against the Dustdevils (10-15). ASU is now 5-0 against TAMIU this season after taking a doubleheader in Laredo on Tuesday, Feb. 19 and another win on Feb. 3 at the St. Mary's Tournament.

“I was really pleased with the way we played defensively today,” ASU head coach Travis Scott said. “We only had one error all day and it didn't hurt us. We have put in a lot of work on defense and it looks like it's paying off. That's going to be crucial down the road.”

Mary Kate McKay (5-3) earned the win in the opener after striking out four and scattering eight hits in five innings of work. Sandra Serna (8-2) secured the victory in the second game after also earning the save in the first game. Serna had two strikeouts in both games and now maintains a 2.39 ERA through 52.2 innings this season.

Morgan Spearman led Angelo State with three hits and added three RBI on the day, including hitting a three-run home run in the opener. Spearman's home run to left-center field was her third of the season. Rachel Moore finished the day with five RBI and four hits. Moore, a sophomore from Katy, drove in three runs in the first game and went 3 for 3 in the second game. She now has 11 RBI and is hitting .414 for the season.

April Breshears added her second home run of the season in the first game with a homer into the right-center field bleachers. Maddy McGarity, Lauren Smith and Lanie Robinson each had two hits in the 9-6 win, while Darian Dunn had two RBI in the nightcap. Smith now has six doubles and Spearman seven after both players doubled in the games. Angelo State took advent of three TAMIU errors in each game to improve to 3-4 at home this season.

“I thought we did a good job of stringing hits together and getting things going when we needed to,” Scott said.

Angelo State returns to action on Tuesday with a doubleheader at Texas-Permian Basin with the games starting at 2 p.m. in Odessa. The Rambelles will then head to Lawton, Okla. where they will start Lone Star Conference play against Cameron with a doubleheader on Friday before the series finale on Saturday.
