SAN ANGELO – Leah McWilliams had 16 kills and a .382 hitting percentage to help lead No. 9 Angelo State to a dominant Lone Star Conference sweep of Cameron on Saturday at the Junell Center.
The Belles (8-2, 2-0 LSC) only trailed twice the entire match and had a .264 hitting percentage while limiting the Aggies (4-7, 0-3 LSC) to a -.008 hitting percentage. ASU has now won 23 consecutive regular-season home matches and eight straight matches against CU.
"We played a lot more consistent today than we did last night against Midwestern State," ASU head coach
Chuck Waddington said. "We were playing really well defensively and were serving tough to get them out of system. More importantly, we played low error volleyball and played consistently from start to finish."
McWilliams established a new career high with her 16 kills and she also contributed five digs and two blocks.
Arielle Bond, a day after having 24 kills against Midwestern State, had 10 digs and a .391 hitting percentage. Junior setter
Maggi Jo Keffury orchestrated a strong offense attack with 37 assists and also added eight digs on defense.
Maddie Huth and
Zoey Hanrahan added four kills each with
Kaelen Valdez leading the team with 14 digs and
Shelby Wilt adding 12 digs. Huth had three blocks to lead the Belles who had five as a team.
McWilliams' previous career high in kills was 14 – coming against Texas Woman's last season in the LSC Tournament and in the Belles' five-set win over Arkansas Fort Smith at the ASU Invitational two weeks ago. The 16 kills on Saturday came on only 34 attacks in only three sets. Her strong performance from the outside hitter position followed Bonds' on Friday and showed the offensive versatility of the Belles.
"We were really strong at the pins this weekend," Waddington said. "Part of that is because we have to get better at finding our middles in transition when the other team attacks the ball. But our outsides did a great job of producing this weekend."
Angelo State returns to action next weekend against Incarnate Word and Texas A&M-Kingsville. The Belles will play UIW at 6 p.m. on Friday in a non-conference match and then travel to Kingsville to play the Javelinas at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
