Belles Defeat Texas Woman's 62-55

SAN ANGELO –
The Angelo State women's basketball team held on to defeat Texas Woman's, 62-55, on Saturday afternoon at Stephens Arena in the Junell Center.

The Belles (8-5, 2-1) had to fend off a rally by the Pioneers (5-8, 1-3 LSC) after being up 16 at halftime. ASU held TWU to 37-percent shooting from the field but Texas Woman's excelled from behind the arc with eight three pointers. The Belles hit six from the three point line and added 14 from the free throw line. Angelo State was able to score 19 points of 19 TWU turnovers. 

The Belles hit 38.5-percent of their shots from the field in the first half on the way to a 37-21 advantage. ASU limited the Pioneers to 28-percent from the field and forced 10 turnovers. Texas Woman's scored the first basket of the game but a Leah LeMaire jumper started an 11-3 run to put the Belles up 11-5 through the first six minutes of the game.

Overall, the Belles outscored the Pioneers 24-8 after the opening basket and led 24-10 with 7:54 to play in the first half. The two teams played even through the first half until Amanda Weaver hit a jumper as time expired for the 37-21 halftime lead.

The second half started with the Pioneers hitting an early 7-3 run to cut the lead to 40-31. The two teams battled back and forth and the Belles kept its nine point lead at 52-43. Another 7-3 Pioneer run cut the lead to 55-50 with under five minutes to play. A LeMaire jumper extended the lead to 57-50 before Michelle Rosewell, Weaver and Haylee Oliver all hit free throws in the final three minutes to secure the 62-55 victory.  

The Belles were led by four in double figures. Rochelle Norris, LeMaire and Rosewell all scored 12 points. It was a career high for Roswell and season highs for Norris and LeMaire. Norris just missed a double-double with nine rebounds.Weaver added 10 points as well. 

ASU forced 19 Pioneer turnovers on the day and made 10 steals. The Belles moved to 7-0 on the season when having double-digit steals.

Toree Mason led the Pioneers with 13 points and seven rebounds.

The Belles return to action tomorrow at 2 p.m. against Texas A&M-Commerce. The game will be heard locally on 1260AM KKSA with Jeremy Bryant on the call.
