Rams earn 10-1 win in Foster Field debut against Colorado School of Mines

SAN ANGELO – Jake Feckley continued his dominance and the Angelo State baseball team added the offensive production behind him to earn a 10-1 non-conference win over Colorado School of Mines on Friday in the home opener at Foster Field.

Feckley (4-0) allowed only one hit and struck out five in 6.0 innings of shutout baseball before being relieved with a 10-run lead. ASU (7-2) finished the game with 12 hits and limited the Orediggers (2-2) to three. Feckley has thrown 27.0 innings without allowing an earned run and has 24 strikeouts and only three walks. He's also limiting the opposition to a .161 batting average and took his career record to 19-8.

"I thought we did a good job of taking advantage of our opportunities with big hits when we had guys on base," ASU head coach Kevin Brooks said. "Jake did a great job of going out there and throwing like he has all season and had everything working. It was good to see us get out to the lead early and stay focused throughout the game."

The series continues on Saturday with a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. before the finale at 1 p.m. on Sunday at Foster Field.

Christian Summers led the Rams at the plate, going 2-for-3 and driving in three runs. Summers, who also reached base with a first-inning walk, finished the game with a double and triple and now has nine RBI through the first nine games of the season.

"He started putting things together last weekend and really built on that today," Brooks said. "I think he'll consistently put together competitive at-bats and come through with big hits for us. If he's going like he was today, we're pretty good."

David Goggin put the Rams on the scoreboard for the first time on Saturday with a triple to center field to score leadoff hitter Nehwon Norkeh who reached base on a throwing error by the CSM third baseman. Goggin's hit extended his hitting streak to nine and he leads the team with 10 RBI. The Rams scored two more runs on a Brett David single to center field that brought in Goggin and Summers. The three-run first inning came on three hits and took advantage of the one error.

ASU added a run in the third with an RBI single from Cameron Massengill to center field that scored Derek Tyner and another run in the fifth when Tyner doubled to bring in Summers who had led off the inning with his first triple of the season. Up 5-0, the Rams posted five more runs on the board in the top of the sixth on five hits. Summers delivered the big hit in the inning, clearing the bases with a double to left field. Goggin, Norkeh and Blake Bass scored on the bases-loaded double by Summers and Hunter Choate added another run with a two-out double to bring in Tyner.

David finished the game 2-for-4 with two RBI, while Choate was 2-for-4 and Tyner 2-for-5. David now has six doubles through the first nine games of the ASU season, while Norkeh has scored a team-leading 12 runs. The Rams used four relievers after Feckley's day was complete with Erik Monson, Mason Leavitt, Hayden Elrod and Danny McInnis each making appearances. Monson, a freshman from Minnesota, struck out four and didn't allow a hit in 1.2 innings of work, while McInnis struck out two to close out the game.

Bass will make his first start of the season on the mound for the Rams in Saturday's opener, while Jason Zgardowski will throw the second game. Bass has made only one appearance this season, striking out one and allowing one hit in an inning of work. Zgardowski will be making his second start and fourth appearance and has 12 strikeouts in 8.0 innings this season.

"What we need tomorrow more than anything is to get a couple of good starts from our pitchers," Brooks said. "Jake has been great as a starter, but we need some guys to step up in that role. We need to get back-to-back good starts, play good defense and continue hitting like we have been on Saturday."
