No. 17 Rambelles Set to Host the ASU George McCorkle Classic

SAN ANGELO – The No. 17 ranked Angelo State softball team will get to play at home sooner than expected as the Rambelles host the 2014 ASU George McCorkle Classic this weekend starting on Saturday.

The Rambelles are 2-2 after the St. Mary's College Classic in San Antonio. The two losses are by a combined three runs. The first loss was an extra inning 9-8 loss to Texas A&M-International with the second being on St. Mary's home field falling 8-6 after tying in the top of the sixth inning.

The George McCorkle Classic will play host to Drury, East Central and Texas A&M-International. A total of 11 games will be played over three days at Mayer Field.

The Rambelles were led by senior Morgan Spearman in the first weekend. The LSC Hitter of the Week went 8-for-11 and finished with a .727 average for the weekend. She scored five runs and hit one double. The Kennedale native was named to the all-tournament team and has a .786 on-base percentage.

Maddy McGarity had a strong weekend as well. The sophomore earned all-tournament honors after hitting .545. The New Braunfels native has ASU's only triple of the season to go along with her four RBIs. McGarity also scored three runs.

Angelo State had a good weekend stealing bases going 16-for-17 over the weekend. Micherie Koria led the team going 5-for-6 while Spearman and McGarity each stole four.

Koria hit .417 for the weekend and scored five runs in her ASU debut.

Darian Dunn averaged .455 for the weekend and hit the Rambelles only home run against Texas A&M-International. She is tied for second with four RBIs but first in runs scored with six.
The Frisco native has a slugging percentage of .818.

Kenedy Urbany had a strong start at the plate going .400. She went 4-for-10 with four RBIs and two runs scored.

Tina Cisneros is the Rambelles leader in RBIs with six. She finished 3-for-8 over the weekend.

The Rambelles are averaging .312 as a team with 34 runs and 22 RBIs.

The pitching for Angelo State was a combined effort with Sandra Serna, Mary Kate McKay and Urbany all seeing time in the circle.

Urbany had two starts and threw 11 innings. The freshman had some nerves in her first start giving up eight runs on 11 hits. The Helotes native settled down in her second start only allowing one run on five hits in a win over UT-Permian Basin.

McKay made two starts and threw a solid five innings against St. Edward's. The senior only allowed two runs on nine hits. The Madill, Okla., native five strikeouts on the season.

Serna earned the win against St. Edward's in relief pitching two innings and only allowing one hit. She threw 4.1 innings against St. Mary's but was the losing pitcher giving up two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Albuquerque, N.M., native has nine strikeouts and a 3.24 earned-run average.

The Rambelles first opponent of the tournament will be Drury. It will be the season opener for Panthers. Drury is picked fourth in the Great Lakes Valley Conference preseason rankings.
The Panthers return catcher Kailtyn Bowles and first baseman Kelsey James. Bowles hit .242 last year with five RBIs while James was third on the team with a .326 on-base percentage. It is the first-ever meeting between the two schools. 

East Central has a 1-3 record on the season. Autumn Suydam is leading the Tigers with a .417 batting average. Lacey Paulk is limited teams to a .183 batting average in the circle and has a 1.69 earned-run average.ASU holds a 7-3 all-time record agaisnt the Panthers

Texas A&M-International enters with a 3-2 record and one of those wins came against the Rambelles. The Dustdevils also has wins against East Central and No. 8 Texas Woman's.
Cassandra DeLeon is tops on the team with a .632 batting average. She has 12 hits, four doubles, two home runs and 10 RBI through five games. DeLeon went 3-for-5 with three RBIs in the first meeting. The Rambelles are 20-1 all-time against the Dustdevils.

All of the games will be streamed on AngeloSports.com and live stats will be available. Sunday's games will be carried locally on 1260AM KKSA with Jeremy Bryant on the call. Tickets will be $7 for adults and $4 for youth/military and students. A tournament pass will be available for adults at $15 and $10 for youth/military and students. Angelo State students will receive free admission with their ASU One Card.
