Belle Volleyball Ready to Take Next Step in 2015

SAN ANGELO – The Belles open up the 2015 campaign on their home floor of Stephens Arena at the Junell Center in the Kathleen Brasfield Invitational against UT-Permian Basin at 12 p.m. followed with Chadron State at 6 p.m. on Friday.

ASU will host Western New Mexico and Newman on Saturday at 12 p.m. and 6 p.m. as well.

ASU head coach Chuck Waddington returns to the sideline for his eighth season at the helm of the ASU volleyball program. Last year he led the Belles to a second place finish in the Lone Star conference and the appearance in the South Central regional tournament for the fourth straight year. He has guided the Belles to at least 20 wins in six of his seven seasons.

Waddington also added two new minds to the brain trust. Over the summer Waddington hired Ben Farmer as an assistant coach and Ashley Davis, a graduate assistant.

Farmer has been involved in several different capacities with some great programs across the country, from scouting, training, statistical analysis and video coordination. Farmer attended TAMU and was a student assistant and practice player for the women's team as well as a men's club player.

He also spent some time at Houston Baptist and was an integral piece to their conference title in 2012. Farmer has cited on several occasions his thirst to win championships and passion for improving players and helping take the program to the next level.

While at WTAMU,  Davis was named the Co-Offensive Player of the Year in the Lone Star Conference while also picking up AVCA All-South Central Region and Daktronics Second Team All-Region honors as well as being named a 3rd Team AVCA All-American.

The Belles return a throng of players from last year's team that went 21-9, but also added some key pieces to fill in some holes due to graduation. One piece to the puzzle returns in Maggi Jo Keffury, who sat out the 2014 season. She was named an AVCA All-American Honorable Mention selection in 2013 and will see ample time at setter.

Keffury is second all-time in school history in assist percentage (.634) and ranks third in career assists (1,453).

A luxury the Belles have in 2015 is youth, but not necessarily inexperienced.  Sophomores Kelly Hasbrouck, Abbie Lynn and Brianna Sotello saw significant playing time last year as true freshmen. Lynn appeared in 30 matches and along with Sotello started 25 matches a piece. Hasbrouck earned playing time in 25 matches last season.

Also returning for the Belles is junior Mallory Blauser, who has been named a captain for the 2015 season and ranks 10th on the list for kills in a season in school history. Blauser also tallied 3.70 kills per set, good for third in a single season in school history. Blauser is joined this year by her older sister, Kelsey, who transferred from Pfeiffer University.

Captain Katie MacLeay returns for her senior season as the team's libero. The future medical school student served as a defensive specialist for much of last season. MacLeay has been instrumental in helping along some of the younger players and has provided a leadership presence on and off the court.

Newcomers include Mallory Davidson, Micheala Sifuentes, Ciara Sheppard, Alyssa Orr, Morgan Seaton, Taylor Lee Seaton and Marinda Killeen.

Other returners include Klohe Harrion, who tallied 37 kills in limited action last season, Cerbi Ritchey, who has also been named a captain for the 2015 season, Zoey Hanrahan, who started every match last season, and Brooke Robertson, who saw time in 24 matches last season.
