No. 12 Belles Cap Weekend with Sweep of Cameron

SAN ANGELO – The No. 12 Angelo State volleyball team wrapped up its weekend road trip with a sweep (25-15, 25-19, 25-15) over Cameron University on Saturday afternoon.

The Belles improve to 16-2, 7-1 LSC with its second sweep of the weekend.  The ASU attack recorded a .325 team attack percentage while its defense held the Aggies to a .108 clip. With the loss, Cameron falls to 2-15 overall and 0-9 in the Lone Star Conference.

"I thought we played pretty well today," commented ASU Head Coach Chuck Waddington. "Our serving and defense were strong for us today. On offense, Abbie [Lynn] was pretty unstoppable for us on the right side."

Once again, Mallory Blauser and Abbie Lynn led the Belles attack. Blauser recorded a team high 11 kills for a .370 clip for the match. The senior also added two aces from the service line to her numbers for the afternoon. She assisted on defense with nine digs and a pair of blocks.  Lynn chalked up a team second 10 kills for the second consecutive match. This gave the junior her seventh match with double –figure kills on the season.  She also added two blocks of her own to help the Belles defense.

Anchoring the Belles defense was Mallory Davidson and Morgan Seaton. Davidson marked 18 digs in her third start as libero, which averaged her 6.00 per set. She also dropped in an ace to take her to a total of 14 on the season. Seaton led the team in front of the net with a season high seven blocks against the Aggies. She also aided the offense with seven kills.

Distributing the rock for ASU was Meghan Parker. The freshman setter chalked up 41 assists for the match and came through on defense with nine digs and a team second three blocks. She is now only 198 assist away from breaking into the ASU all-time record book as she has 719 in 2016.

Also playing well for the Belles in this match was Brianna Sotello and Tulani Titley. Sotello fired in nine kills and contributed nine digs and a block to the defense. Titley tallied seven kills for a .500 clip against CU. She also added a pair of blocks for the match.

The two teams opened the first set exchanging points; however, the Belles took the early lead. Tied at seven, three straight attack errors by the Aggies followed by a kill from Parker gave ASU the spark it needed to pull away. After straight ASU errors making the score 11-9, The Belles embarked on an 8-2 run that would put them ahead by eight. This run saw kills by Lynn, Titley and Sotello, along with a block by Titley and Blauser. With 23-15 on the board, Blauser lazered in two consecutive kills to put the set away for the Belles.

Titley and Blauser started the second set with a monster block to put ASU on the board first.  With a 4-3 lead, the Belles continued to place points on the board with kills from Lynn, Blauser and Seaton along with a Seaton/Parker block.  Leading 16-11, Ali Davison checked in with her first kill of the match. The Aggies put together some small runs in an attempt to rally but were unable to take over the lead. A Sotello kill would send ASU into the break with a 2-0 set lead.

In the final set, the Belles were first to score again as Titley rifled in a kill from the middle blocker position.  Cameron would then take a 5-4 lead, before a Lynn kill, a Parker/Seaton block and an ace from Micheala Sifuentes regained it for Angelo State. The Belles would not look back as they maintained the lead for the remainder of the match. Up 11-9, Lynn jump started a massive 10-1 run for ASU. Seaton would place the match in the win column for the Belles as she delivered the final kill of the day.

The Belles return home on October 14 at 7 p.m. to face Western New Mexico. This match will be the Belles' annual Dig Pink match, where ASU will be wearing its pink jersey's in order to bring awareness to breast cancer. The Belles will be selling "Dig Pink" shirt with proceeds going to the Sideout Foundation for cancer research.
