SAN ANGELO -Â The No. 5/7 Angelo State women's basketball team will face its first road test in Lone Star Conference play this season, as the Belles take on Midwestern State at 5:30 p.m. Thursday in Wichita Falls.
ASU currently boasts a 6-0 record on the season and is currently the only undefeated team left in the LSC as well as one of only 13 Division II teams left without a loss. The Belles have taken on two conference opponents at home already, beating Texas Woman's and Texas A&M-Kingsville by more than 20 points per game.
The Belles have outscored opponents at a torrid pace this season, using the conference's top scoring offense to win games by an average of 22 points per game, which ranks first in the LSC and 12th in the nation.
"We have a tremendous amount of talent on our team right now," ASU head women's basketball coach Kevin Baker said. "Coaches still worry all of the time about things that could go wrong and what we can actually do with that talent, but I'm proud of the way we're playing right now."
The offense has been successful for a number of reasons, but has been helped by the lack of turnovers so far this year. The Belles rank first in the conference in fewest turnovers and also in turnovers forced, giving them the highest overall turnover margin at 6.83 per game. An average of 14.03 assists per game has allowed ASU to rank No. 1 in the LSC in assist-to-turnover ratio as well.
Senior guard Taylor Dorsey leads the Belles as well as the conference in scoring with 21.8 points per game. The Ft. Worth native has made almost 60 percent of her shots on the season, leads the team with 3.2 assists per game and has also been a factor defensively, grabbing a conference-leading 2.83 steals per game.
Two other Belles are averaging double-digit points per game as well in Jasmine Prophet and Lexi Murphy. Prophet has poured in an average of 12 points in the five contests she played in, and the LSC preseason player of the year also leads the team in rebounding with 7.2 per game and blocks with seven on the season. Murphy is the team's leader from behind the arc, hitting 41 percent of her shots from deep and averaging 11 points a game. The Nebraska native is also second on the team in both rebounds and assists, averaging 5.8 boards and three assists in her six contests so far.
Also contributing off the bench for ASU has been Madi Greenwood and Chenelle Pelle, who are both averaging more than seven points per game. Greenwood has scored in double figures in two contests so far this season and has played the most minutes of any non-starter. Pelle has also had a pair of double-digit scoring efforts and averages 4.8 rebounds per game.
"Depth is probably the biggest thing," Baker said. "We've got some kids coming off of our bench who are playing extremely well. We knew at the end of last year we needed to sign some more kids and get a deeper bench, so we've been excited about how that's gone so far.
Midwestern State comes into the matchup with a 2-5 record on the season and no wins in conference play. The Mustangs won their opening two contests against Adams State and Texas A&M International, but have since lost five straight including conference matchups at Tarleton State and at Texas A&M-Commerce.Â
The matchup will be broadcast live on 1260AM KKSA with the voice of the Rams, Jeremy Bryant, on the call.
"When you go on the road in the Lone Star Conference, records go out the window," Baker said. "Everybody is pretty good at home and Midwestern State in particular is quite a bit better on their own court than if they were away. I've never had an easy game in Wichita Falls, and I expect it'll be tough again come Thursday night."
