Belles Fall to Tarleton State

SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State women's basketball team had its seven game home winning streak snapped losing to Tarleton State 65-50 on Wednesday night at Stephens Arena at the Junell Center.

The Belles (15-6, 8-3 LSC) committed 19 turnovers and shot only 33.3-percent from the floor. The TexAnns (13-9, 7-5) scored 17 points off turnovers and scored 38 points in the paint compared to just 24 for ASU.

Taylor Dorsey led the Belles with 11 points. Lexi Murphy grabbed a career high 10 rebounds. Diamalises Rivera and Kiahna Thompson each scored seven points in the loss.

The two teams were tied at eight through the first four minute of the first half. The TexAnns would score six straight points until Thompson answered with a 3-pointer to make it 14-11 with 3:29 to go in the first half. It would be the last bucket ASU would score in the quarter as Tarleton State extended its lead to 17-11 at the end of the first quarter.

TSU continued to push its lead in the second quarter.  Dorsey drained a three to make it 17-14 but a 9-2 run made the deficit 12 at 28-16 with 5:37 to go in the first half. ASU didn't quit using a layup by Dorsey to spark a quick 6-0 run to cut the lead to 28-22. TSU pushed the advantage to 35-25 at the half.

ASU came out of the locker rooms and outscored TSU 18-12 in the third quarter. KeAnna Kelly hit a 3-pointer to trim the lead to 35-28 but Tarleton State answered. The TexAnns was up 44-34 until the Belles scored five unanswered highlighted by an old fashioned three point play by Rivera. The senior was fouled in the paint making a basket and sank the free throw. A jumper by Natalie Quesnel with 14 second left cut TSU's lead to 47-43.

Tarleton State pulled away in the fourth quarter hitting 50.0-percent from the field while the Belles struggled to hit only 23.1-percent from the floor. ASU was down 51-47 with only 8:10 to go but would only manage three points the rest of the game.

Tarleton State's Branna Fuller led the way with 13 points.

The Belles will head to Commerce to face Texas A&M-Commerce on Saturday, Feb. 13 at 4 p.m. ASU will play its final regular season home game of the year on Wednesday, Feb. 17 at 5:30 p.m. against Cameron.
