Dorsey's 37 Pushes Belles to 83-77 Road Win at Midwestern State

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Angelo State's Taylor Dorsey scored 37 points and grabbed 12 rebounds as the Belles held off a late rally to defeat Midwestern State 83-77 in Wichita Falls on Saturday evening.

The Belles improved to 18-6 on the season and 11-3 in the LSC. It is just the third time in the last 11 seasons that ASU has won at least 18 games in a season. Angelo State shot 56-percent from behind the arc draining nine three pointers. The Mustangs (5-20, 4-11 LSC) hit 46-percent from the field

"I think it does a lot for our confidence," Angelo State head women's basketball coach Kevin Baker said. "It was a really tough road game and I'm proud of our grittiness. Midwestern State played a great game and gave us a run for our money. We needed it because it makes us play at a higher level. When we needed a shot we were able to create it."

It is Dorsey's fifth double-double and second time to go over 30 points this season. The 37 points is the tied for fifth most in a single game in school history and a career high. The junior was 12-for-18 from the field and a perfect 6-for-6 from behind the arc. The six 3-pointers is the seventh most in a single game. She also sank 12 free throws and dished out four assists.   Brea Mitchell added 18 points and seven rebounds while Prophet chipped in 16 points and seven rebounds.

The Belles Dorsey opened the fourth quarter with a three pointer to put ASU on top 60-52. Midwestern State wouldn't quit using a 7-0 run to trim the deficit to 60-59 with 7:38 to go. The lead was still one at 62-61 at the 5:10 mark of the fourth quarter when Mitchell hit a jumper. The jumper sparked an 11-1 to extend Angelo State's lead 73-62 that was capped off on a layup by KeAnna Kelly. ASU would not let MSU get closer than six the rest of the way for the final 83-77.

Angelo State took a 34-32 win at the break but MSU went up 35-34 with 9:52 to go in the third quarter. Dorsey would take over by scoring seven of the next 11 points as the Belles regained the lead at 46-35. ASU would lead by as much as 12 at 56-45 until a late 7-1 rally cut the lead to 57-52.

ASU led 21-14  after the first quarter but Midwestern State started the second quarter on a 11-6 run to make it 27-25 with 3:19 to go in the first half. MSU took a 32-31 lead with 20 second left but Mitchell sank a three pointe to put ASU on to 34-32 at the break.

MSU's Kristin Rydell scored 17 points while Jacquar Westbrooks added 16 points.

The Belles will have a quick turnaround with a game tomorrow at 2 p.m. in Denton against Texas Woman's.
