SAN ANGELO – The No. 23 Angelo State volleyball team travels to Cameron on Friday, November 3 and Midwestern State on Saturday, November 4 as it begins to close out its regular season slate.
Coming off a sweep of Texas A&M – Kingsville, the Belles have taken over the fourth spot in the conference standings with a record of 17-8, 9-7 LSC. In the first regional poll of the season Angelo State emerged fourth out of 10 total ranked teams. As it begins to move through the remainder of its regular season matches, ASU will be seeking to maintain its spot within the top eight ranked team in the South Central Region.
Cameron will enter Friday's matchup with a 7-18, 3-13 LSC record. The Aggies will be attempting to rebound from a three match skid, with its last loss coming at the hands of Texas A&M – Commerce in five sets. In the Last matchup between ASU and CU, the Belles pulled out the 3-1 victory. First server for this match will take place at 5:30 p.m.
On Saturday morning at 11 a.m. ASU will take on the Mustangs in Wichita Falls. MSU is 13-13 overall and 6-10 in the conference at the moment. Midwestern State will host No. 14 Tarleton State the evening prior to its match up with the Belles. The Mustangs will be seeking to bounce back against the pair of ranked opponents after dropping its October 31 match to Texas Woman's, 3-1. MSU was swept by ASU in the Stephens Arena at the Junell Center in the pair's last matchup.
With an attack percentage of .238 and a 14.12 kill per set average on the season, the Belles offense is sitting second in the LSC. Defensively, it leads the conference as it averages 17.52 digs per set only allowing its opposition to record a .142 clip for the season.
Brianna Sotello continues to lead the squad averaging 3.87 kills per set recording a .255 attack percentage thus far. She has also been an asset to the ASU defense with an average of 2.99 digs per set allowing her to move into sixth all –time in school history with 1400 career digs. Sotello has also recorded a team third 39.0 total blocks on the year.
The Belles will also look to the on court leadership of senior Morgan Seaton. The senior middle blocker has been a role player on both sides of the ball. She leads the team with 84 blocks on defense and 2.69 kills per set for the offense. From the service line, Seaton has added 24 aces placing her second on the team.
Also turning in production from both sides of the ball have been Sundara Chinn and Anna Graham. Chinn is currently second on the team with a 2.68 attack percentage. She has been a stead producer for the defense as well with a team third 40.0 total blocks. Recording 2.45 kills per set, Graham is third in the category. She has also been a proficient attacker as she carries a team second .288 attack percentage into this weekend's matches. The sophomore has added a squad second 65 total blocks to her numbers this year as well.Â
Meghan Parker will continue to handle the majority of the Belles ball distribution this week. The setter has upped her average assists per set 8.79 and has recently recorded her 2100th career assist. In ASU's last two matches the sophomore put up over 40 assists and has recorded a total of six matches this season with similar production. Parker has also had great success from the service line as she leads the team with 29 aces in 2017. Defensively, she has also provided assistance digging an average of 2.13 balls per set.
Heading the defense for Angelo State will be libero, Bailey Mulder. The freshman is sporting a 2.41 dig per set average heading into this week's pair of matches. She has also slowly worked her way into the top servers on the squad with 20 total aces to date.
Making a recent comeback, Haley Coulter will provide greater depth for the ASU attack. The Florida native recently co-led the Belles with 11 kills and 16 digs against Texas A&M –Kingsville. During this match she also recorded a phenomenal .500 clip to head the team. This marked her second consecutive match with double-digit kills and digs since her return to the court.
