No. 23 Belles Cap Weekend With Sweep of MSU

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – The No.23 Angelo State volleyball team capped its weekend trip with a sweep of Midwestern State (25-22, 25-15, 25-12) on Saturday afternoon.

The Belles climbed to 19-8 overall and 11-7 in the Lone Star Conference with the road win. Marking a solid team clip of .333 for the match the offense had two players with double-figure kills. ASU outside hitter Bailey Drum marked career numbers as she led the squad with 13 kills and 11 digs for her first career double-double. Fellow Belle, Brianna Sotello, followed with 10 kills of her own.  Meghan Parker continued to distribute the rock for ASU as she tallied 33 assists and also led the squad from the service line with four aces. With the loss, the Mustangs extended its losing streak to three matches and fall to 13-15, 6-12 LSC.

"I'm really proud of how Bailey [Drum] played today," commented ASU Head Volleyball Coach Chuck Waddington. "She was terminal as an attacker on the left side, and the opponent had no answer for her. She also played some solid defense and distributed the ball really consistently in the serve and receive. We always want our kids to be prepared for their opportunities and she definitely made a difference for us today."

The Mustang's opened up the match taking an early 15-8 lead, but a Sotello kill would initiate a 9-2 run. This would bring the set to an even 17, and saw points scored by Morgan Seaton and Parker. It also saw an Anna Graham, Seaton block, which marked the first of a team leading four blocks on the day for Seaton.  Both players also recorded a team highest .538 attack percentage for the match. After bring the set even another four times, with 22-22 on the board, a final Seaton kill followed by a pair of MSU errors secured the set win for the Belles.

Angelo State came out firing in the second half as it opened with an 8-2 run. MSU would attempt to halt the Belles scoring with a kill, but Tulani Titley quickly answered rocketing in another ASU kill to keep the team rolling. Angelo State then continued to hold the Mustangs at bay, limiting MSU to 15 points in the set.  With a 23- 15 lead, a Parker kill followed by a Mustang attack error gave the Belles the 2-0 lead heading into the break.

After two opening points from MSU in the third set, the Belles rattled off a 16-3 run to take control. Parker led the assault with three service aces, which was also joined by kills from Drum, Sotello, Graham and Titley. The Mustangs would be unable to recover from the run and Seaton would secure the sweep with a final ASU kill.

The Belles return home to close out the 2017 regular season with bouts against Eastern and Western New Mexico.  ASU will also be celebrating its seniors during the Saturday, November 11 matchup with WNMU.
