SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State volleyball team extended its undefeated streak with a pair of sweeps over Florida Southern (25-23, 28-26, 25-22) and Metropolitan State (25-21, 25-22, 25-17) on Friday afternoon.
The Belles are now 7-0 on the season as they head into day two of the Colorado Premier Tournament. ASU's prolific attack recorded a .388 attack percentage in the first match which included a .407 second set and .471 second set. Its stout defense shined in the second match holding the opposition to a .093 clip, including a -.61 third set. With the defeats, both Florida Southern and Metro State fall to 2-3 records.
"It was a great day for the Belles," said ASU Head Volleyball Coach Chuck Waddington. " We played at a pretty high level for both of our matches today. Brianna [Sotello] and Sundara [Chinn] were really tough to stop in the opening match, and our middles Morgan [Seaton] and Anna [Graham] were really active in our final match of the day."
Once again the trio of Brianna Sotello, Sundara Chinn and Anna Graham led the Belles attack. Sotello headed the squad with 26 combined kills (12, 14) for the two matches. Â The senior also picked up her second double-double of the season as she added 11 digs against the Road Runners in the Belles second match of the day. Chin checked in second with 22 total kills on the day. This included a 16 kill performance against Florida Southern with a .464 clip. Defensively, she also added seven total blocks against MSU. Rounding out the group, Graham recorded a team third 14 total for the day while marking a .615 clip against Metro State. Â Â
Meghan Parker set the offense as she recorded 18 assists in the first match and 27 in the second. She also assisted the team with 14 total digs and three service aces on the day. Also, helping to set up the Belles, Eadara Files recorded 33 total assists to open the tournament, marking 18 against FSC and 18 against MSU.
Micheala Sifuentes and Morgan Seaton anchored the ASU defense. Sifuentes tallied 12 digs in the first match and 14 later on against MSU.  While, Seaton lead the team with a team leading nine total blocks for the two matches. The senior recorded eight of those blocks against the Road Runners.
In the first set of the day, ASU got off to a slow start with the Mocs getting a 5-0 lead right out of the gate. However, an 8-2 run from the Belles led by Sotello, Parker, Chinn and Seaton got the team back in the driver's seat with an 8-7 lead. The two squads would battle it out with the Mocs eventually regaining the lead late in the set, 19-18. A big swing from Abbie Lynn would place the Belles back out in front and kicked of another small 5-1 run to give ASU back a 23-20 lead. Angelo Stat would maintain its lead and close out the set with a Sotello kill and a second ace from Parker.
The Mocs once again got off to an early start in the second set taking a 5-4 lead. The Belles and Mocs would exchange leads several more times throughout the match. Tied at 23, FCS would take the lead, but before the Mocs could close out the set an error on their part would give the Belles another chance and sent the set into extra points. An ASU attack error once again put the Mocs into striking position, when Anna Graham lazed one in to bring the score back to an even 26. The following two straight FCS errors would close out the set in the Belles favor and send them to break with a 2-0 lead in the match.
Using the momentum from the second set, Angelo State took a quick lead in the final set of the match via a Morgan Seaton kill. Once again the two teams would exchange points and keep it tight, until a 7-2 Belles run would give ASU a significant 16-11 lead. This go ahead run saw kills from Bailey Drum, Chinn and a big solo block from Sotello. With a 24-22 lead on the board, Drum would add another kill to her tally for the day, which would close out the match for the Belles.
In the second match of the day, Metro State struck first, but ASU would quickly respond and the two sides would exchange points. With the score tied at seven, the Road Runners pieced together several points to take a 10-7 lead. A kill from Lynn would stifle the run and subsequent kills from Sotello and Chinn would bring the score back to an even 11. Tied once again with 17 -17 on the board, a Sotello kill would jump start a 6-1 run to push the Belles back out in front. MSU would be unable to recover and the final kills from Chin and Drum would put the set into the ASU column.
In the next set ASU jumped out to a 3-1 lead and never looked back. The Belles would maintain the lead throughout the set. MSU would close in to just one point bring the score to 10-9, however, Lynn would record a solo block which was followed by a Parker ace. This would allow ASU to pull back away. Graham would shut the door on the set with a big kill and send the Belles into the break, up 2-0 in the match.
ASU would continue to use its energy from the second set and once again jumped out to an early 3-1 lead. Â This time the Road Runner would respond and answer with a small run of its own giving it the 4-3 advantage. A kill from Seaton placed the score back to even and a follow up ace from her would return the lead to the Belles. This turned into a 9-2 run and a 12-6 lead for ASU. Â MSU would pull back to within three at 17-14, but a Graham kill and a pair of Bailey Mulder aces got the Belles back on track. Seaton would drive home the sweep with a final kill.
