Belles come back to end regular season with win

SILVER CITY, New Mexico – The Angelo State volleyball team fell in an early 2-0 hole but was able to come back and defeat Western New Mexico 3-2 Saturday night.

The win gave the Belles a 22-8 record to end the regular season, including a 15-5 record in Lone Star Conference play. The record earned ASU the No. 3 seed in next weekend's LSC Postseason Tournament, taking on the No. 6 seed Texas A&M-Kingsville at noon on Thursday in Stephenville.

Western New Mexico had all the momentum to start the match, jumping out to a 16-10 lead. The Belles made an effort to come back, eventually taking a 20-19 lead, but the Mustangs were able to hold on and win 26-24.

The momentum held in the second set, as Western New Mexico built an early 4-0 lead and ended the game with three straight points for a 2-0 set lead.

In the third set, the Belles righted the ship. The set was back and forth to start before back-to-back kills from Sundara Chinn and Baleigh Allen sparked a 14-2 set-ending run, giving ASU their first set win on the night.

Allen was Angelo State's best attacker on the night, hitting .321 with a team-high 14 kills. She also had 8 blocks, but did not lead the team, as freshman Sophia Berg set a new career high with 10 blocks on the night.

Another run, this time 9-1, in the second set gave ASU some breathing room. The Mustangs kept it close late with a 6-0 run of their own, but Berg ended things with a kill.

Angelo State jumped out in front again in the fifth and final set, building an 8-3 lead, but WNMU brought it within two at 11-9. Another kill from Allen sparked a quick 3-0 ASU run, and a service error from the Mustangs ended the game.
