SAN ANGELO - The Angelo State baseball team split a doubleheader with Colorado State-Pueblo Saturday afternoon, winning the first game 3-0 before dropping the second game 3-2.
The Rams (8-5) scored just five runs in the two games combined after scoring nine in the series opener on Friday night.
Tyler Lesley started the first game of the day for ASU and followed up his Lone Star Conference Pitcher of the Week performance from last week with another strong outing.
The San Antonio native through the entire seven innings of the doubleheader game, scattering six ThunderWolve hits and striking out four batters. He faced just four batters over the minimum in his outing.
Angelo State's offense got Lesley a lead in the third inning as center fielder Elias Aguirre led off with a triple to left center for his first hit of the series. Second Jonathan Soberanes followed with a walk, and the pair worked a designed play that allowed Aguirre to score.
Aguirre then helped the Rams scored their final two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. The Midland native singled up the middle for his second hit of the day and promptly stole second to get himself in scoring position.
Soberanes drove Aguirre in with a single and moved into scoring position on the throw to home plate. A single from Nicholas Novak scored Soberanes for the final run by either team in game one.
Game two was a low-scoring affair as well, with the teams scoring a combined five runs.
The ThunderWolves broke the scoreless tie with a solo home run in the top of the third inning, but the Rams quickly answered in the bottom of the inning.
Parker Bramlett and Joe Scott Pace began the inning with back-to-back singles and Parker Tadlock followed with a solid bunt that allowed him to reach via a fielder's choice. Novak then worked a walk to bring the run home.
Elias got his third hit of the day in the bottom of the sixth inning of game two, and advanced to second on a bunt from Novak. Jacob Boston then drove him in with a single up the middle to give ASU the lead heading into the final inning of play.
The ThunderWolves responded with two more solo home runs in the top of the seventh to get back on top, and ASU was unable to rally again in the bottom of the seventh inning.
The Rams will try and secure a series split against the ThunderWolves at 1 p.m. on Sunday at Foster Field at 1st Community Credit Union Stadium.
