SAN ANGELO – Coming off of a sweep of Texas A&M-Kingsville this past Friday, the Angelo State volleyball team will head to Midwestern State and Cameron in hopes of improving their season record of 12-4 (5-1 Lone Star Conference).
"I'm playing five freshmen, and all of them are doing great things for us," Angelo State head volleyball coach Chuck Waddington said. "There's a lot of good volleyball happening and we're doing good things against good teams."
The Belles have been excellent defensively all season, leading the conference by a wide margin in opponent hitting percentage, ranking second in opponent kills per set, and ranking third in blocks per set. Baleigh Allen has led the Belles at the net all season with 51 total blocks for an average of 1.04 blocks per set played. Freshman Sophia Berg is not far behind with 42 and Sundara Chinn sits in third place on the team with 37.
Junior Sundara Chinn and freshman Makenna Hanssen both have over 160 digs on the season and average nearly three digs per set played. Setter Meghan Parker, freshman Morgan Preston, and freshman Chloe Robinson all have contributed over 110 digs this season as well.
Offensively, the Belles have been led by Audrey Fragniere and Sundara Chinn, who have combined for 300 kills this season on a .215 hitting percentage. Anna Graham has come on strong lately and sits in third place on the team with 104 kills, averaging right around 2.5 kills per set played. Baleigh Allen also has over 100 kills, and sits in fourth place in the LSC in hitting percentage at .312.
Setter Meghan Parker has been steady all season long, pacing the Belles in assists with 572, which ranks second in the Lone Star Conference. She is also leading the team and conference in service aces with 29, which ranks in the top 30 nationally.
Brianna Hudson, Makenzie Griffin, Bailey Drum, and Grace White have all made significant contributions to the team this year. Hudson has posted 28 kills on a .267 hitting percentage and averages over one kill per set played. Griffin has excelled in limited playing time, averaging just under two kills per set played. Drum has come on strong recently, and now ranks sixth on the team with 53 kills, and White has posted 15 kills in just 16 sets for an average of .94 kills per set.
Midwestern State comes into Friday's match with a record of 2-12 (0-6 LSC) and having lost eleven matches in a row. Angelo State is 32-9 all-time against the Mustangs.
Cameron enters the weekend with a record of 2-14 (0-6 LSC) and having lost seven matches in a row. The Aggies will battle Tarleton State on Friday before welcoming the Belles to town Saturday. Angelo State is 31-11 all-time against the Aggies.
