Rambelles Host George McCorkle Challenge at Mayer Field

SAN ANGELO, Texas – The Angelo State Rambelle softball team plays its home opener as they host their annual tournament this weekend, the George and Ola McCorkle Challenge, sponsored by Bahlman Cleaners. The tournament will run from Friday, February 14 to Sunday, February 16.
The Rambelles are currently 7-3 overall after playing in the Arkansas Tech and Florida Tech Invites.

Series Matchup:
Since 2009, Angelo State and Texas A&M International have played each other 34 times, with Angelo State leading the all-time series, 30-4. The last time these two teams played each other was on April 24, 2019, where the Dustdevils defeated the Rambelles 8-0 at Laredo. TAMIU hit a single down the left field line, scoring a runner to bring the score to 8-0.
 
This will be the second time in school history that Angelo State and Ouachita Baptist will have played each other. The last time that ASU and Ouachita Baptist played each other was on February 19, 2011, where Angelo State defeated the Tigers, 9-1. DeeShanaLynn Tafiti would hit a huge grand slam for the Rambelles to take a 5-1 lead over the Tigers in the bottom of the third inning. The Rambelles would score four more runs in the bottom of the fifth, ending the game, 9-1.
 
This will be the second time in school history that Angelo State and New Mexico Highlands will have played each other. The last time that ASU and NMHU played each other was on February 3, 2018, where the Rambelles defeated the Cowgirls, 8-0. The Rambelles would score eight runs early in the top of the first inning off of seven hits. Several hits from Danae Bina, Mykayla Stroud, and Taegan Kirk put the Rambelles in a good position to lead the game.
 
Since 2007, the Rambelles and Texans have played each other 43 times with Angelo State leading the overall series, 27-16. The last time Angelo State and Tarleton State played each other was on March 9, 2019, where the Texans defeated the Rambelles, 16-1, on their home field. Angelo State had a hard time controlling the ball in the circle, walking 10 batters and hitting four more with pitches. Tarletons pitcher gave the Rambelles a hard time in the box as well, only allowing three hits in five innings.
 
Key Players
Courtney Barnhill continues to be a major impact on the Rambelles offense for Angelo State. Barnhill has had 34 at-bats with 12 hits and six runs. Barnhill has a .471 slugging percentage with two triples and four RBI for the season so far. From a fielding standpoint, Barnhill has had 20 chances with 19 putouts and a fielding percentage of .950.
 
Maleya Burns has continued to show her offensive might as she smacked yet another home run out of the park for her third this season against Alabama-Huntsville. Burns currently has a .593 slugging percentage, hitting six hits at 27 at-bats and seven runs. Burns has also hit one double and eight RBI for the season so far. From a fielding standpoint, Burns has had five chances and five putouts for a 1.00 fielding percentage.
 
Meagan Hill had an outstanding weekend from inside the circle for the Rambelles, throwing her first collegiate no-hitter against the Molloy College Lions. Hill pitched for seven innings, throwing seven strikeouts for a .82 ERA for the 2020 season so far. Hill then turned around for day two of the Florida Tech Invite and threw a one hitter against the Florida Tech Panthers with four strikeouts.

The Rambelles begin Lone Star Conference play as they travel to Oklahoma to face off against the Oklahoma Christian Eagles and the Cameron Aggies in two double headers. The Rambelles will play on Friday, February 28 in Oklahoma City, then on Sunday, March 1 in Lawton, Oklahoma.
