Weatherford, Okla. - The Belles improved to 4-0 on Saturday with a 2-0 victory over Southwestern Oklahoma State, with a goal and an assist each for Cindy Rodriguez and Avery McNeme, in conjunction with a defensive effort for the Belles that saw them only allow two shots in 90 minutes, with neither of those shots coming on target.
The Belles only allowed one shot towards the end of each half, with two shots allowed in a game being the lowest for the Belles since their matchup against UT Permian Basin this past spring.
"Our defense only allowed two shots the entire game, none on goal, that's a pretty strong performance, especially at halftime," said head coach Travis McCorkle. "We switched our formation, which put a little more pressure on the defenders, and yet they held up strong."
The switch in formation led to eight shots for the Belles in the second half, while the defense only allowed one shot.
"They [the defense] need to understand that the standard for them is really high, and it's a good thing, but it's also something that you know they've got to live up to every game."
The Belles' scoring breakthrough came through Rodriguez in the 34th minute off an assist from McNeme. Roriguez becomes the first Belle this season to score more a single goal, while McNeme adds her fifth assist of the season in four games.
The two midfielders switched roles in the 78th minute, with McNeme on the receiving end of a Rodriguez assist, her first of the season.
This week, McNeme contributed to all five goals for the Belles, with two goals and three assists.
"I think the team did better taking care of the ball and our midfield picked it up today," said McCorkle, comparing his team's performances from Thursday to today. "I thought they had much more pride in their performance in keeping the ball."
The Belles are 4-0 on the season and return to action next weekend when they host New Mexico Highlands in their final non-conference match.
