Fort Smith, Ark. – After struggling in quarters two and three, the Angelo State women's basketball team mounted a valiant comeback effort but ended up losing 65-63 to UAFS in Fort Smith Thursday evening.
The Rambelles fall to 6-2 overall, dropping their first Lone Star Conference contest and now sit 2-1. The Lions improve to 3-6 and pick up their first LSC win, now sitting 1-2 in conference play.
40 MINUTE RUNDOWN
- The Lions got off to a quick start, but a fastbreak jumper by Sawyer Lloyd put the Rambelles ahead 8-7 halfway through the first.
- Tayjanna McGhee-Pleasant hit a pair of threes down the stretch as the Rambelles took a 20-17 lead into the second quarter.
- The Rambelles scored the first seven points of the second, as a Madeline Stephens layup brought the lead to ten points, 27-17 with over seven minutes remaining in the half.
- UAFS would then go on a 14-2 run to reclaim the lead and take a 31-29 lead into the break.
- The Rambelles could not stop the bleeding early in the third quarter as the Lions pulled ahead by 11, 43-32, after a 12-3 run.
- Points by Lloyd and McGhee-Pleasant down the stretch pulled the Rambelles back withing striking distance to enter the fourth quarter, trailing by seven, 54-47.
- A Stephens layup knotted things up 56-56 after the Rambelles finished a 9-2 run of their own to begin the last frame.
- The Lions went 5-of-6 from the free throw line in the last four minutes of the contest as they just edged the Rambelles 65-63.
GAME STATS
- Stephens led the way for the Rambelles, scoring 19 points on 8-11 shooting from the field. She also pulled down six boards and dished our two assists.
- McGhee-Pleasant (18 points, 10 rebounds) and Lloyd (13 points, 12 rebounds) would each finish the game with a double-double.
- Brighton Adams went 4-8 from the field, scoring nine points in her first start of the season in the absence of Payton Brown.
- The Rambelles shot 35.9 percent from the field, while the Lions were 24-51, 47.1 percent.
- The Rambelles grabbed 41 rebounds in the contest, again crashing the offensive boards, pulling down 16.
- This is Angelo State's first loss to UAFS in the short history between the two squads (ASU leads 2-1).
