SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State volleyball team closed the weekend on the Lone Star Conference Crossover, facing Lubbock Christian and the match, despite being the last of the weekend, was certainly not the least for the Rambelles as they came back from dropping the first set to defeat the Lady Chaps in four sets.
The Belles tallied ten kills and nine attack errors in the first set, while the visitors only committed two to win 25-17.
The second set saw the Lady Chaps run out to a 6-0 lead before the Belles responded with a 7-2 run of their own to get back into the set. The Lady Chaps took a 24-22 lead late in a back-and-forth set, but the Belles scored the last four points in the set, all off the backs of Lady Chap attacking errors, including two consecutive blocks by
Marina Sanchez to win the Belles their first set of the weekend.
The Belles returned to form in sets three and four, hitting .333 and .343, respectively. In those same sets, they held the Lady Chaps to .182 and .065, respectively.
Middle blocker Sanchez turned in a dominating performance at the net with 13 total blocks on the evening. The mark is the second-best in Belle Volleyball program history and the best in the rally-scoring era (since 2001). It is also the most blocks by an LSC player since Cameron's Alysha Pritt notched 14 blocks against Texas Woman's on October 22, 2005, also the second-best mark at the conference level in the rally-scoring era.
Offensively, Sanchez added seven kills, with
Sam Rodgers leading all players with 15 kills while also adding eight blocks. The Midlothian native only committed one error to hit .500 on the afternoon.
Kaila Garnett set a new career-best with 13 kills while hitting .370.
Caleigh Enax followed with six kills and 13 digs, while
Cate Boldrick had five.
Making her first appearance at libero, freshman
Ireland Ferguson led all players with 16 digs.
The win sees the Belles snap a seven-match losing streak and improve to 4-8 on the season. They open conference play on Wednesday against Western New Mexico on the road before returning home to host UTPB next weekend.
