No. 23 Rams Sweep Doubleheader to Secure Series over Javelinas

SAN ANGELO, Texas – The No. 23-ranked Angelo State (29-12, 27-12 LSC) baseball team swept the double header against Texas A&M-Kingsville (23-22, 21-22 LSC) with final scores of 9-4 and 6-5 to secure the series over the Javelinas.

GAME ONE: ASU 9, TAMUK 4
The Javelinas struck first with two runs in the opening frame as they pieced together a couple singles and a double. ASU struck back with a run of their own in the ensuing half inning as Justin Harris drew a lead-off walk and scored two batters later courtesy of a two-out single from Weston Valasek.

The Rams tied the game in the third inning as Tripp Clark singled through the middle to score Harris, who reached on a one-out walk.

TAMUK retook the lead in the next half inning as they, once again, utilized two singles and a double to scratch two more runs across against ASU's starter Braxton Pearson before he forced a ground out to limit the damage. The senior's night ended after five innings pitched where he allowed two earned runs off seven hits while striking out three as he collected his third win of the season.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, Hunter Holt led off with a home run to center field followed by Ryder McDaniel and Justin Harris providing extra base hits to put up three runs and give ASU the lead.

Insurance came in the sixth as the Rams put together four more runs capped off by a two-run home run from Tripp Clark. The score remained as Jude Cook collected a quick three outs in the top of the seventh to bring the ballgame to a close.

GAME TWO: ASU 6, TAMUK 5
Action picked up in the second inning as both teams traded two runs apiece. In the top half, the Javelinas took advantage of back-to-back hits to put themselves in position to score off a ground out and a single.

In the bottom half, Weston Valasek led off with a single and reached second off an error from a pick off attempt before Ryder McDaniel singled up the middle. He too, scored after stealing second base thanks to a double to right center from Kamden Kelton.

From there, the home crowd witnessed a pitching duel between TAMUK's starter and Alezeah Gutierrez as both teams managed to get runners in scoring positions multiple times but were not able to get any across. Gutierrez's night ended after pitching six full innings allowing four earned runs off four hits and five walks while collecting three strikeouts.

The tie was broken in the bottom of the sixth inning as the Rams loaded the bases for Justin Harris to draw a walk and Jacob Guerrero to slice a base hit into right-center field to go towards a four-run inning.

As fast as the Rams were able to take the lead, the Javelinas were just as quick to respond as a three-run home run made it a one run contest. However, Caleb Huertz bounced back from the damage to force a ground out and a strikeout to secure the victory.

With the wins, the Rams secure the series and will now look for the sweep on Sunday, April 14 with first pitch from Foster Field at 1st Community Credit Union scheduled for 1 p.m.
