LUBBOCK, Texas – The No. 13 Angelo State baseball team fell to UAFS as the seventh-seeded Lions blanked the third-seeded Rams 5-0 to open the Lone Star Conference double elimination tournament.
The ballgame opened up with minimal damage as the Rams were able to get runners in scoring position in three of the first four innings of scoreless baseball. This trend continued throughout the remainder of the ballgame as the Rams put runners on base in four of the last five innings but were unable to get any across as they left a total of 12 runners stranded.
The Lions struck in the top of the fifth as a lead off single turned into the game's first run on an RBI-double to left center. After a sacrifice bunt moved the runner to third, a second run was scored on a wild pitch. In the top of the seventh, a one-out double allowed UAFS to extend their lead to three as it came around to score on a single and a sacrifice fly in the following two at-bats.
Braxton Pearson started on the mound for the Rams and allowed the three aforementioned earned runs on five hits and a walk while striking out six in 7.1 innings of work.
UAFS tacked on the final two runs in the top of the ninth as a two out walk put a runner aboard for a home run over the right field wall to bring the game to its final score as the Rams went in order in the ensuing half inning to end the game.
With the loss, ASU dropped to the elimination bracket and will face off against the loser of fifth-seeded UT Tyler and top-seeded Lubbock Christian at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 10.
