SAN ANGELO –
Ashley Brown kicked in the game-winning goal in the 87th minute to give the Angelo State soccer team a 2-1 victory over Lone Star Conference foe Southwestern Oklahoma at the ASU Soccer Field Sunday afternoon.
The first goal of the contest came in the 24th minute when Angelo State's (6-3-1, 3-0-0 LSC)
Hanna Horeis found
Brandie DeBacker with a lead pass for a one-on-one with the goalie. DeBacker, the 'Belles leading scorer, beat the SWOSU keeper for her fourth goal of the season. The offensive attack was relentless, as the Rambelles outshot the Bulldogs, 13-8, and have now outshot their opponents in seven of their 10 games this season.
After 47 minutes of scoreless soccer, Southwestern Oklahoma (4-6, 0-3 LSC) tied the contest in the 71st minute when Kira Bertrand tallied her third goal of the season. The freshman beat the ASU defense and was able to guide the ball low and to the far post.
With the score tied at 1-1, the Angelo State soccer team continued to press and was able to take advantage in the closing moments. DeBacker beat the defender on a free ball and was able to center it to Brown in the middle of the box. Brown corralled the ball and fired it to the back of the nylon for the game winner. The senior netted her second goal of the season in front of her parents who traveled from Harlan, Iowa, which should make the 15-hour drive home go by a bit faster.
“It wasn't our best game by any means, but the girls showed their resiliency after giving up a goal and then to coming back and find a way to win,” said third-year head coach
Travis McCorkle. “It was big for Ashley to get that second goal for us and her second goal of the weekend.”
The Rambelles went 3-1 on their four-game homestretch and will now have to road matches beginning with LSC opponent Texas A&M Commerce at 7 p.m., on Oct. 7. For more information on Angelo State soccer, logon to our website at AngeloSports.com.
