SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State soccer team will travel to Odessa to take on Texas-Permian Basin Thursday at 5 p.m., at UTPB Soccer Field. After a day of rest, the Rambelles will then travel to Dallas to battle Dallas Baptist at 7 p.m., Saturday at Patriot Field.
Last week, Angelo State (2-1-1) hosted the Angelo State Invitational and finished the tournament 1-1-0. In the opening match against Adams State, the 'Belles
Megan Schaffer found the back of the net twice in a five minute span, while
Katie Camlin added a goal to propel ASU to a 3-1 victory. The Rambelles suffered their first loss of the year to Colorado State-Pueblo, 2-0, Sunday at the ASU Soccer Field in the tournament's final game. Despite the loss, the Rambelles were aggressive, outshooting the ThunderWolves, 17-10, while holding an 11-4 edge in shots on goal.
Texas-Permian Basin is 2-1 this year behind eighth-year head coach Dennis Peterson, but trail the overall series against Angelo State, 1-5-2. Last year's game ended when UTPB handed the Rambelles a 1-0 loss on the ASU Soccer Field. The Falcons got their lone goal in the 29th minute when Hanna Dozier netted a cross from Jessica Lentz. ASU's
Lauren Carnes led the 'Belles with four shots, three of which were on goal, while
Brandie DeBacker added three shots of her own.
“We're going to need to get off to a stronger start than we have been,” said head coach
Travis McCorkle. “Like our team, UTPB is very good with its possession and ball control. In their last game, they dominated possession, so I think Thursday's game will come down to finishing.”
Angelo State won last year's home match against Dallas Baptist, 2-1, in overtime with goals coming from Christian Willman and DeBacker. ASU leads the overall series 3-1-0.
Michelle Lenard is entering her third year as the head coach of the Patriots and holds a 20-23-2 record. In 2009, Lenard led the team to their highest conference finish in the last five years. The squad finished third in the Heartland Conference with a record of 7-5.
“Dallas Baptist is going to be a good test for us,” said McCorkle. “We're going into a tough environment, which will help prepare us for conference play next week. It's going to be a good game and hopefully we can have a strong finish.”
