SAN ANGELO – Sierra Anderson scored off a cross from
Lauren Carnes in the opening minutes of the second overtime to lift the Angelo State soccer team to a 2-1 win over New Mexico Highlands on Saturday at the ASU Soccer Field.
“Lauren had a great run and got a great game-winning assists,” ASU head coach
Travis McCorkle said. “Sierra did a great job putting herself in position and finishing. It was a scramble and she did everything she needed to do to help us win the game.”
The Rambelles (2-0) trailed most of the game but tied it with a
Lauren Bateman goal in the 75th minute of play. Bateman and Anderson, who are both freshmen and scored their first career goals, both scored off assists from senior captain
Lauren Carnes who now has 11 assists in her career. Bateman is also credited with an assist on the game-winning goal and compiled three points in her home debut which also fell on her birthday.
“Our first half wasn't bad but we had a bad moment that put us down in the game,” ASU head coach
Travis McCorkle said. “They capitalized on our mistake and we were playing with our backs to the wall the rest of the game. I like the way we figured things out and really put a lot of pressure on them.”
Angelo State outshot the Cowgirls 18-3 in the game and 10-3 in shots on goals.
Ashley Exford and
Hanna Horeis each led the Rambelles with four shots, while Anderson had three shots. Danielle Edwards recorded two saves – both coming in the second half.
“It was a great home win to get the season started out here. We want to continue lighting up our new scoreboard with wins.”
The Rambelles return to action on Friday against Colorado Mesa and on Sunday versus Fort Lewis in Durango, Colo. The next home game is on Friday, Sept. 14 at 5 p.m. against Midwestern State.
