COMMERCE –
Maggie Schaffer had six shots that missed the mark before the seventh went down as the game winner as she drilled an 81st minute goal to lift Angelo State to a 2-1 Lone Star Conference win over Texas A&M-Commerce on Friday at the A&M-Commerce Soccer Field.
“It felt really good to get that goal,” Schaffer said. “We all played with a lot of heart the entire game and never stopped believing that we were going to win. We just wanted to keep pressing at their defense. We had to keep pushing and pushing and that's what we did.”
The Rambelles (4-2-1, 2-0-1 LSC) had eight shots in each period and got on the board first on a
Selena Alvarez header off an assist from
Lauren Carnes in the 77th minute. Schaffer's goal came three minutes after the Lions' Eva Brutto had responded to Alvarez's goal to give the Rambelles their first road win of the season. TAMU-Commerce falls to 1-2-0 in LSC play with the loss and to 2-4 overall.

ASU outshot the Lions 16-12 in the game with Schaffer finishing with seven shots,
Hanna Horeis with three and
Sierra Anderson two. Carnes' assists were her team-leading third of the season, while goalkeeper Danielle Edwards finished with three saves. Defensively,
Caitlyn Conaway came up with a strong clearing play late in the game with the Lions attempting to respond to Schaffer's goal.
“If you want to be a good team you have to win on the road,” ASU head coach
Travis McCorkle said. “We took a good first step tonight but it can only go down as one win. It's a step in the process. Our defenders were winning everything at a lot different points in the game. Our midfielders got the ball out wide and we took pressure off ourselves.”
Schaffer now has two goals on the season and eighth of her career at ASU. Carnes' assist was her 12th as a Rambelle and ASU snapped a three-game losing streak to the Lions.
The Rambelles return to action at 2 p.m. on Sunday in Denton to take on Texas Woman's. ASU went 2-0 against TWU last season, including earning a 3-1 win at Pioneer Field. Texas Woman's comes into the game with a 2-1 conference record after a 3-2 win over Incarnate Word on Friday.
“Texas Woman's is the second half of the weekend and is just as important as tonight's game,” McCorkle said. “Our girls deserve to enjoy this win but we still have a lot of work to take care of this weekend. It's going to be a challenging game for us on Sunday and we're going to have to play like we did tonight to get the results we want.”
