SAN ANGELO – Maggie Schaffer and
Brianne Brown scored first-half goals to help lead the Angelo State soccer team to a 2-0 non-conference win over Colorado Mesa on Sunday at the ASU Soccer Field.
The Rambelles (2-2-1) also posted their second shutout of the season and continued exhibiting offensive pressure by outshooting the Mavericks (1-2-0) by five shots in the game.
Sierra Anderson and Brown led the team with three shots each in a game where seven Rambelles took shots. Â
"We knew that Sierra was going to get a lot of attention from their defense and we needed to have other offensive players step up," ASU head coach
Travis McCorkle said. "They were double-marking Sierra and it gave other players opportunities which they took advantage of."

Schaffer started the scoring with a goal off an assists from freshman
Haley Mendel in the 22nd minute of play. The ball was gathered in by Mendel following a
Kathleen Keoughan shot that hit the cross bar and passed over to Schaffer for her first goal of the season and 11th in her career at ASU.
"Maggie's goal was a result of all the technical work that we put in during practice," McCorkle said. "Her first touch was perfect off her left foot and she did a great job of hitting it low and to the post."
Brown would send a header into the back of the net seven minutes later on a corner kick from
Kelli Regan. The goal was the first in Brown's career at ASU and the assist was Regan's first.
"Kelli served a great ball in and Brianne did exactly what she was supposed to do with it," McCorkle said. "She turned her head where she wanted the ball to go and that's exactly what happened. It was a picture perfect goal and I couldn't be more proud and happy for her."
Dani Edwards played the entire 90 minutes in goal for the Rambelles and earned her first shutout of the season with four saves. The reigning Lone Star Conference Goalkeeper of the Year now has nine shutouts in her career and continues to benefit from exceptional defensive play from the ASU defensive unit.
"Dani is doing really well and she is organizing and leading," McCorkle said. "Credit also needs to go to
Caitlyn Conaway,
Jordan Benfield and
Lauren Perry. They're all playing exceptional defense and aren't letting the other team do anything they want to do. It's been a combination of great effort and organization."
Emma Thompson led Colorado Mesa with three shots, while Sarah Pope added two shots. Sarah Schnetzler had two saves in goal for the Mavericks. The two programs have now split results the past two seasons.
Angelo State will play the next six games on the road, starting on Friday at Dallas Baptist before traveling to play St. Mary's next Sunday in San Antonio. The Rambelles will also play road games at Midwestern State, Oklahoma Christian, Texas A&M-Commerce and Texas Woman's before hosting West Texas A&M on Friday, Oct. 11.
