LAS VEGAS, N.M. - The Angelo State soccer team opened the 2013 season with a 1-1 draw at New Mexico Highlands on Thursday at Perkins Stadium.
Kathleen Keoughan scored the Rambelles' goal in the third minute of play off a double assist from
Chloe Contreras and
Kelli Regan, but Highlands responded with a goal from Brooke D'Onofrio in the second half to force overtime sessions and then the draw.
"I thought we had a great start to the game with a goal and were strong defensively," ASU head coach
Travis McCorkle said. "
Dani Edwards had a great save early in the game and we had a lot of good play from younger players. Everyone got some minutes and experience. The pace was frenetic and the girls handled it really well."
ASU finished the game with 11 shots and eight on goal, while the Cowgirls also put eight shots on goal in the 110 minutes of extended play.
"All in all, I thought we did good as a team for the first game," said ASU senior
Maggie Schaffer. "There are still things we need to improve on, but I thought it was good."
Keoughan's goal came in her first collegiate game and off assists from two other freshmen.
"It was really early in the game and Kelli and she laid the ball off to me," Keoughan said. "It was bouncing and I had an open shot. I think our defense was solid tonight on a turf field. I was impressed with the way we played."
Edwards and
Shantel Wittke each played in goal for the Rambelles with Edwards finishing with four saves and Wittke three.
Katie Squires, Schaffer, Regan and
Sierra Anderson each had shots in the game for the ASU offense.
ASU returns to action at 2 p.m. on Saturday against Ouachita Baptist in the home opener at the ASU Soccer Field. The Rambelles will also host Wayland Baptist at 4 p.m. on Sunday.
"I reminded them after the game that we need to be about winning the games," McCorkle said. "It was a good performance on the road, but it's about taking the next step now and winning these games. We need to create more quality offensive chances. It was the first game of the season and we will continue working hard to improve."
