SAN ANGELO - The Angelo State soccer team earned its seventh shutout of the 2017 season Friday night, defeating Eastern New Mexico 1-0 to advance to the Lone Star Conference Tournament Final.
The Belles (13-3-1) will now face West Texas A&M in the championship match at 1 p.m. on Sunday at the ASU Soccer Field.
"We played really well for most of the match," Angelo State head soccer coach Travis McCorkle said. "I thought we let off a little in the second half and Eastern New Mexico really pressed hard and took advantage of that. We were able to hold the shutout and get the win though, and at this time of year that's all that really matters."
Freshman Avery McNeme's goal in the 53rd minute was the difference in the match. McNeme received a pass from midfielder Loni Byers on the right side of the goal, immediately flicking the ball toward the goal.
McNeme's initial shot was blocked, but the ball bounced up in the air and the Lubbock native headed the ball over the keeper into the back of the net. It was the second goal of her collegiate career and gave her eight points for the season.
The assist was the second of the season for Byers.
Angel State had a number of other chances in the match, outshooting Eastern New Mexico 26-14.
McNeme had the most scoring chances with six shots and four on goal. Sophomore Trenadey Scott had five shots with one on goal, Analise Watson had four with two on goal and Callie Smith, Cassandra Moosburger and Mackenzie Broderick all had one on goal.
In total, ASU had 10 shots on goal, while the Belle defense limited ENMU to just four on the night.
The back line was led by Callie Smith, Marissa Brezgiel and Kylie Deel, who each played the full 90 minutes. The three were assisted by Molly Warren and Kyah Carlsen.
Sammy Cude also helped out, saving all four of the Greyhound shots on goal and increasing her season save total to 85.
West Texas A&M defeated Texas A&M-Commerce 2-0 in the second round of the LSC Tournament as well to advance to final on Sunday. The Lady Buffs come into the match 9-6-5 and are the No. 3 seed in the tournament. WT has won the LSC Postseason Tournament six times in program history.
