Belles Win Home Opener 4-2

SAN ANGELO - The Angelo State soccer team won its home opener on Sunday afternoon at the ASU Soccer Field, defeating Southwestern Oklahoma State 4-2.

The Belles moved to 3-1-0 on the season with the win, getting off 19 total shots in the game and scoring a season-high four goals in a single game.

ASU got in an early hole in the contest, giving up a goal just five minutes into the match to SWOSU's Memory Phiri. Phiri was one of the Bulldog's leading attackers for the day but the ASU defense limited her to just two shots on goal.

Southwestern Oklahoma State's other leading attacker was Alimata Rabo, who came into the game having scored five goals through the team's first four games. Rabo got another goal in the match, but was held to just two shots on goal all day.

The defense was led by Callie Smith, who played the full 90 minutes at center back, and helped by Marissa Brezgiel, Meagan Denn, Janessa Dunbar, Kyah Carlsen and Kylie Deel.

Angelo State's attackers responded with a goal of their own in the 20th minute. Forward Cassandra Moosburger sent a through ball between a pair of defenders to sophomore Trenadey Scott who got it by the goalkeeper.

The goal was Scott's fourth of the season, and it was the first assist of the season for Moosburger.

Moosburger followed up the assist with a goal of her own just 10 minutes later as she collected a rebound from Megan Allen's shot and put it in the back of the net. The goal gave Allen her first assist and first point of the season.

The half ended with the Belles still holding their 2-1 lead.

SWOSU got another early goal in the second half, as Rabo headed in a corner kick to tie the game up again. Overall in the game, ASU took five corners to just four for the Bulldogs.

The Belles finally broke the tie in the 72nd minute with another goal from Scott. Forward Mackenzie Broderick crossed the ball into the penalty area from the right side of the field and Scott directed it into the net to make the score 3-2.

Avery McNeme and Elizabeth Rodriguez connected on an almost identical play just 10 minutes later, as McNeme crossed the ball in and Rodriguez hit home. The goal was the second of the year for Rodriguez and it was the first collegiate assist and point of her career for McNeme.

Other Belles who got off shots in the game were Morgan Sibson, Analise Watson, Loni Byers, Adison McNeme and Megan Denn.

ASU continued to keep SWOSU off the board in the final seven minutes after Rodriguez's goal, solidifying the 4-2 win.

The win moved goalkeeper Sammy Cude to 3-1-0 on the season and marked her 13th career win. Cude made four saves in the game.

Angelo State will begin Lone Star Conference play in its next game, going on the road to face Texas Permian Basin at 7 p.m. on Wednesday.
