Belles Hit the Road for Pair of Games

SAN ANGELO - The Angelo State soccer team will be on the road for the second straight weekend to open the 2017 season, taking on Fort Lewis at 1:30 p.m. CST on Friday in Durango, Colorado and then facing New Mexico Highlands at 12 p.m. CST on Sunday in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

The Belles enter games three and four of the season with a 1-1 record after a 3-0 win over Central Oklahoma in the season opener and a 1-0 loss to Florida Tech.

Sophomore forward Trenadey Scott provided the majority of the Belles' offense on the weekend, scoring less than 10 minutes into the game against UCO and then finding the back of the net a second time in the first half.

It was the first multiple-goal game in her career at ASU for Scott and brought her halfway to her season total of four from 2016. Scott then led the team in shots again against Florida Tech and has eight on the season so far.

Elizabeth Rodriguez also scored a goal for the Belle against Central Oklahoma and had an assist on one of Scott's goals as well for a team-second three points.

Overall, the Belle offense has gotten off 19 shots in the two games with eight on goal.

Defensively, ASU earned its first shutout of the 2017 season in the season opener against UCO. Through the first two games, Angelo State has allowed a total of 26 shots but just one goal for an opponent shot percentage of .038.

Defender Janessa Dunbar led all field players in minutes played at 160 with Callie Smith and Kyah Carlsen not far behind. Other defenders who helped allow just one goal all weekend include Marissa Brezgiel, Meagan Denn, Molly Warren and Kylie Deel.

"We have a lot of defensive players on the team," McCorkle said, "so we're still kind of experimenting with the best pairings and matchups for us to be successful. We know we have some good defenders, but I don't think I was expecting to get the shutout that early so that was a great accomplishment."

The defense was also helped by a strong pair of opening games from goalkeeper Sammy Cude. The California native made five saves in the season opener against Central Oklahoma for her first win and shutout of the season and then matched her career high in saves against Florida Tech, stopping eight shots in the matchup.

Cude has the third best save percentage in the conferenced at .929 and is now 11-6-2 in her career with the Belles.

The Skyhawks come into the matchup at 0-1-1 on the young season, having faced a pair of Lone Star Conference members in Eastern New Mexico and West Texas A&M. Fort Lewis scored twice in their season opener but also gave up a pair of goals, tying with ENMU. In the second game, the Skyhawks were unable to get on the scoreboard, falling to WT 0-2.

New Mexico Highlands has only played one match so far this season against Southern Nazarene and losing 3-1. The Cowgirls will face fellow Lone Star Conference member West Texas A&M on Thursday before the matchup with the Belles on Sunday.
