SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State tennis team will begin postseason play this weekend as the No. 5 seed in the Lone Star Conference Tournament, taking on the No. 4 seed Texas A&M-Kingsville at 10 a.m. on Friday.
The Belles finished their first spring regular season since 1986 with a 15-7 record and a 3-3 showing in LSC play.
In singles play, ASU is led by Maria Delgadillo and Zoe Gubbels, who each have 15 wins on the season. Delgadillo has played mainly on court two for the Belles, while Gubbels has seen time on courts three and four.
Delgadillo has also reached the double-digit win mark in doubles play this season, where she is 11-11 with partner Ena Ovcina. The two have played together exclusively on court one.
Gubbels has played with a couple of doubles partners this season, but most recently competed with Virginie Becht. The two have fared well together, with a 5-1 record on doubles court two overall.
Individually, Becht has posted a 13-8 record this season, splitting time between courts four, five and six.
On court three doubles, the Belles have used Yasmine Ansari and Lucie Maitrot mainly, with the pairing finishing the season at 3-3.
Maitrot has the second best record on the team in singles with 14 wins to just six losses, and Ansari has posted a 13-6 record while playing mainly on court three in singles play.
ASU has also gotten contributions from Melanie Dreux, who is 7-1 in singles play this year while filling in on court six.
The Belles and Javelinas faced off once in the regular season in San Angelo, as ASU fell 5-4 in the match. If ASU wins the opening round match against Texas A&M-Kingsville, they will advance to take on Midwestern State in the semifinal round at 6 p.m. on Friday. The championship match will take place at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
