Tennis Heads to Arkansas for Three-Match Contest

SAN ANGELO, Texas – The No. 14 Angelo State University women's tennis team travels to Arkadelphia, Arkansas to continue their regular season play against Mississippi College on Friday, February 21, and Delta State University and Henderson State University on Saturday, February 22, respectively.

Last Time Out:
The Belles traveled to Oklahoma and competed against Oklahoma Baptist University and the No. 9 University of Central Oklahoma. The Belles defeated the Bison in all three doubles matches they played as Valentina Gonzalez and partner Ena Ovcina claimed the first doubles point, 6-1. Anna Schneeman and Dianela Rodriguez teamed up to claim the second point, 6-1, and Maria Delgadillo with her partner Zoe Gubbels claimed the final doubles point with a 6-4 win.

In singles, Ovcina defeated her opponent in two straight sets by scores of 6-2 and 6-2. Rodriguez finished shortly after Ovcina, defeating her opponent 6-1 in both sets. Gubbels defeated her opponent 6-3 and 6-4 in her match, with Schneemann grabbing the final point for ASU in two sets, 6-4 and 6-0.

Against the No. 9 Bronchos, the Belles battled against a very skilled opponent, dropping their first match of the season, 4-0. In doubles, Schneemann and Virginie Becht were leading their opponents, 4-3, before their match would go unfinished. Gonzalez and Ovcina fell in their match, 6-2, with Delgadillo and Gubbels falling in a tight match, 6-3, as well.

In singles, Gubbels fell in her first set in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (3), as well as lose her second set, 6-2. Ovcina's match would go unfinished after she would force a tiebreaker to tie her match at 1-1. Ovcina would lose the first set, but would battle back to take set two, 6-3. Schneemann fought hard to recover from her first set loss and battle back to tie in set two, 6-6 before her match went unfinished. Rodriguez dropped her first set by score of 6-0 but battled back in set two and fell short by a score of 7-5.
Gonzalez fell in both her sets by scores of 6-4 and 6-1. Delgadillo rounded out the singles matches for the Belles as her match also went unfinished. She battled in set one and fell short by a score of 6-4 but she fought back in set two and tied the set 5-5 before her match went unfinished.

Up Next:
Following the matches this weekend, the Belles will return home for its home and conference opener on Saturday, February 29 in a double header. Angelo State will open with non-conference opponent Northeastern State University at 10 a.m. and follow with conference opponent University of Texas Permian Basin at 3 p.m.
