SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State women's tennis team enters the final week of the regular season with everything to play for heading into the Lone Star Conference tournament, with the Belles only a half-game back of the first-place tie between Cameron and St. Mary's.
The Aggies host UAFS this week while St. Mary's head to east Texas to face UT Tyler, while the Belles face Texas A&M-Kingsville on the road this Thursday before returning home to face Western New Mexico on Saturday to close out the regular season.
The Belles are 14-6 overall on the season and 6-1 in conference play, having won their past five league matches.
Saturday's match against Western New Mexico will also see the Belles honor their two seniors –
Ena Ovcina and
Valentina Gonzalez – before their final home regular-season match. The pairing is the most accomplished in the young program's history, with both being named All-Americans in 2019 and winning the ITA South Central Regional Championship doubles this past fall.
Ovcina, a fifth-year senior from Tidaholm, Sweden, is the last remaining member of the inaugural Belles Tennis team from the 2017-18 season. Ovcina has played 231 matches in her five seasons, 43 matches more than anyone else; she is the only player to have broken the 200-match mark.
She has a 59-48 record in singles play and 75-49 in doubles play, making her the winningest doubles player in program history; all 93 of her doubles matches in dual play have come at the number one line. She is a three-time All-LSC selection and was the LSC Newcomer of the Year back in 2018.
Gonzalez, a native of Medellin, Colombia, is a four-year player for the Belles, having transferred from Seminole State College in 2018. Gonzales has played in 171 matches in singles and doubles, the fourth-most ever in the program.
Gonzalez is 54-27 in singles play and 62-28 in doubles play, with the 54 singles wins and 62 doubles wins ranking in the top four all-time; she is the winningest player at the number one singles line with 43 wins.
She is a four-time All-LSC First Team selection and was the conference's newcomer and player of the year in 2019. In addition to being named a doubles All-American with Ovcina in 2020, she was named an All-American on the singles side in 2019.
